The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the LORD God had made. One day he asked the woman, “Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?”

2 “Of course we may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,” the woman replied. 3 “It’s only the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden that we are not allowed to eat. God said, ‘You must not eat it or even touch it; if you do, you will die.’ ”

4 “You won’t die!” the serpent replied to the woman. 5 “God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.”

6 The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too. 7 At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.

8 When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man and his wife heard the LORD God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the LORD God among the trees. 9 Then the LORD God called to the man, “Where are you?”

10 He replied, “I heard you walking in the garden, so I hid. I was afraid because I was naked.”

11 “Who told you that you were naked?” the LORD God asked. “Have you eaten from the tree whose fruit I commanded you not to eat?”

12 The man replied, “It was the woman you gave me who gave me the fruit, and I ate it.”

13 Then the LORD God asked the woman, “What have you done?”

“The serpent deceived me,” she replied. “That’s why I ate it.”

14 Then the LORD God said to the serpent,

“Because you have done this, you are cursed

more than all animals, domestic and wild.

You will crawl on your belly,

groveling in the dust as long as you live.

15 And I will cause hostility between you and the woman,

and between your offspring and her offspring.

He will strike your head,

and you will strike his heel.”

What is Sin?

Sin therefore is the will to retain and follow after what justice forbids, and from which it is free to abstain.

Sin is the will of retaining or of obtaining, what justice forbids, and whence it is free to abstain?

Sin is simply doing what is wrong- What goes against what is right.
Adam and Eve in the garden with the serpent
Did God really say?
The serpent tries to cause doubt of God’s word
Who is the serpent? The devil whom Jesus says

The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy.

Causing doubt in God’s word is one way the thief steals kills and destroys
We question what God actually says
“Am I really good?”
“Does God even care?”
“Am I actually loved?”
And when we doubt God’s word we doubt what God actually says about us.
God created you and says “You are Good”

You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body

and knit me together in my mother’s womb.

14 Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!

Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.

We doubt these words- “This can’t be true of me!”
And maybe that doubt comes form others.
Parents
Being bullied
Hurt from others
All of these come back to the major problem and that is sin
James writes

People can tame all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and fish, 8 but no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison. 9 Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God. 10 And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right!

what else do the serpent do?
Causing them to question if God is truly good?

“You won’t die!” the serpent replied to the woman. 5 “God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.”

This comes back to the fact that if God is so good then why is there so much bad?
Why is there so much hurt?
Why am I depressed?
Why am I so hurt?
Why am I so broken?
God must be withholding something from me
but the answer comes back to sin-
Sin leads death, and we feel that everyday.
We live a world full of people who are sinners, and the result of their work leads to death.
Even when we try to do things right eventually the whole thing gets messed up.
But God is Good, and because of that we can have hope.
When Adam and Eve doubting God and even thought he was lying to them
God makes a promise to them

And I will cause hostility between you and the woman,

and between your offspring and her offspring.

He will strike your head,

and you will strike his heel.”

God pointed to the hope of everyone who has been broken because of sin- and that Was Jesus Christ

But when people keep on sinning, it shows that they belong to the devil, who has been sinning since the beginning. But the Son of God came to destroy the works of the devil.

You can have every work of the devil broken in your life- and it is through Jesus Christ.
