Introduction:
Our studies of Titus has given us much to consider about the Kingdom and the expectations of God for us as citizens of His Kingdom. We cannot live according to the worlds standards. Our standards are God’s standards for our daily life.
Paul is adamant about the character of the leaders in the church and the congregants. Paul charges Titus to be deliberate when teaching the churches in Crete. As many of you recall, chapter one discusses the character of the pastor and leaders of the church. In chapter two Paul begins to specifically address the character and qualities of the men and women in the Church.
Today, as we continue in chapter two, we approach Paul’s words to Titus regarding the young men and further responsibilities for Titus.
Our text today advises Titus to live as an example and teach other men to be an example.
Develop Sensible Young Men
Titus 2:6 (ESV)
6 Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled.
Paul urges Titus to invest time in the younger men in the church by instructing them on how to maintain self-control. In other words how to consider their actions and the consequences of their actions.
Titus is charged to “urge” them to be self-controlled. That word “URGE” carries the meaning from its greek origin {To Walk along side and encourage }.
He is not to only preach to them on Sundays but he is to set aside some time to engage in their development. He is to offer opportunities to constructively build their lives.
Application: Our young men cannot have a chance if we pull away from them. We must be encouragers for them to do the right thing. When we fail to teach and instruct our young men that when we fail. We do not fail our children when they make bad decisions. We fail them when we do not teach them right from wrong.
Transition: Here is another principle involved in this text. Paul tells Titus to Always Model GodlyBehavior
Always Model Godly Behavior
7 Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity,
Paul turns now again to expectations he has of Titus. This he does primarily because Titus is a young man. Titus is a young pastor and Paul reminds him that he is required to live by these standards and also model them.
Paul is not merely telling Titus to just be a good guy and do good stuff. He is challenging him to live Godly. Do what is pleasing to God.
