Thanking God Alone

Text: Psalms 30

Introduction

David has now returned to the throne! This dedication come from either the building of a new palace or the rededication of the existing one at that time.

1) Verses 1-3

(v1) David has a reason to “exalt” the Lord!
God had returned him to the throne.
His exaltation was fleshed out through a special dedication of the palace following Absalom’s defilement of it.
APPLICATION — No matter the size of the house of the family who lives there, all should be dedicated to serving the Lord! (gospel obedience)
(v1) God lifted David up to the place of service to Him.
There are some places God would have you to serve, but we sometimes think there is no way we can attain that for Him.
As we know, David had enemies who apposed him and his God.
Enemies can come in all shapes and sorts that bring pressures to us being faithful to a joyful surrendered life.
David said, “Thank you Lord for not allowing my enemy to have the final laugh over me.”
(v2) God not only HEARD him, but also HEALED him.
Let us not be narrow minded to think healing pertains only the physical.
David is speaking concerning healing of body and mind.
(v3) Life and death of anyone rests in the hands of God.
A healthy life is the best choice and truly is God’s choice for us.
A life lived healthy is not indicative of a life remaining healthy or alive.
Quote: The more imminent our dangers have been, the more eminent our deliverances have been, the more comfortable are they to ourselves and the more illustrious proofs of the power and goodness of God. A life from the dead ought to be spent in extolling the God of our life. [Henry, M. (1994). Matthew Henry’s commentary on the whole Bible: complete and unabridged in one volume (p. 782). Peabody: Hendrickson.]

2) Join In On The Praise (vv4-5)

(v4) Notice the statement of POSSESSION.
“…O ye saints of his”
This is probably the hardest thing for us to consistently surrender too.
However, we are quickly reminded of this truth through the Holy Spirit.
(vv4-5) Notice the character of God
David is calling all God’s children to be COMPLETELY CAPTIVATED by His holiness.
What you believe about your Lord determines how you live for Him.
When your heart forgets, so does your body!
What do nations forget God? It starts with God’s children forgetting the true nature of God.
(v5) We clearly see the reasons for praise.
His ANGER / our WEEPING
His anger can be a short lived experience.
We deserve God to be angry with us until we are consumed and never forgiven.
When we offer up humiliation and repentance, His anger is turned away.
His FAVOUR
Without favour placed on us, there would not be any sort of salvation for sinners!
(v4) Notice the call to action
Whoever/whatever captivates your heart, captivates your life!
Sing and give thanks.

3) Verses 6-7

David had rested his soul in his own prosperity! He never thought things would deteriorate like they did.
Whatever mountain you think you have security in, remember, it’s not much higher than the common ground.
It is still DIRT!
We foolishly sometimes dream that due to God’s blessings today, God won’t allow despair to come tomorrow.
Don’t think, “I have now had my fair share of trouble, God will now only give me a life of ease.”
David wisely gave credit of the stability of his prosperity to God.
(v7) God know how to remind us all where all good things and our strength comes from!
Quote: when the sun sets night certainly follows, and the moon and all the stars cannot make day. [Henry, M. (1994). Matthew Henry’s commentary on the whole Bible: complete and unabridged in one volume (p. 783). Peabody: Hendrickson.]
Before his dethronement, his trust shifted from His heavenly Master to his earthly Mountain.
Notice to whom his supplication was made too; GOD.

4) Verses 8-10

Hebrews 4:16 “16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”

5) Verses 11-12

All of David’s trouble happened when he least expected it!
God graciously delivered David out of all his troubles.
Notice the eternal nature of the thanks he promised God.
Remember this: Spend your time rejoicing and weeping over God’s rest and prosperity He gives you, because a storm of trouble can move in very quickly!
