Recap/Intro

Alright everyone, let’s go ahead and dive right into it. We are going through a series of messages in the gospel of Luke.
And every week we’ve begun with a statement of who Jesus is. Just a quick reminder, we’ve covered
Jesus as the prophesied one
Jesus as a man
Jesus as worthy of your life
And tonights passage, Luke 6, we are going to be focusing on Jesus as a Preacher.
So go ahead, get your eyes on a bible, whether that be in person or on a device. Turn to Luke 6, tonight we are going to be starting verse 20.
And as you’re turning there, I want to lay a foundation for us, of what preaching is…or more importantly, why preaching is.

Preaching Defined:

Two things that you need to know about preaching if we are to look at Jesus as a preacher.
Preaching is necessary for receiving the gospel.
Romans 10:14–17 ESV
How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
2. Preaching is instrumental in applying the gospel.
2 Timothy 4:2 ESV
preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.
Reprove: Expose or Convict
Rebuke: confronting obstinance
Exhort: urge/implore/encourage - to urge righteousness
Preaching is crucial in the life of the believer, it’s crucial in God’s design to have the gospel…the word of Christ…bear on your life both for your salvation, and for your sanctification.
So can we center ourselves around the importance of preaching?
Preaching allows us to fulfill our 3 C’s as a college ministry.
Preaching helps us to center our lives on Christ, commit ourselves to personal and external discipleship, and certainly become more confident in the word of God.
Okay…now that we have that...

What’s Jesus’ Message?

Let’s get in the text together…Luke records here in Chapter 6, one of Jesus’ most famous sermons. The gospel of Matthew records it more fully…but here in Luke we see an outline of many of the main points.
Here in verse 20, Jesus just beginning his message…and here’s what he says.
Luke 6:20–26 ESV
And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. “Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied. “Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh. “Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man! Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets. “But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. “Woe to you who are full now, for you shall be hungry. “Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep. “Woe to you, when all people speak well of you, for so their fathers did to the false prophets.
So we’re going to be taking this passage a chunk of the time, not diving into each individual verse but seeing the overarching themes of them.
In this passage…Jesus has an overarching purpose to charge his disciples to..

Think Differently

Jesus turned everyone’s expectations of holiness/righteousness upside down.
Previous expectation
New expectation

Think Inwardly

We have a nature of allowing things to be to impersonal
This applies to us: The Pharisaical trap of trusting in our own righteousness vs. the righteousness of God.
How did the Pharisees become pharisees? They were well intentioned.

Think Kingdom-Minded

Notice the natural assumption in the text…that you will be discipling others, aiding in their sanctification

Outro

When feeling convicted of sin, or thinking about personal growth…are you more concerned with disinfecting rather than discipling?
