Colossians 3:12–19 (KJV 1900)
12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;
13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.
14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.
15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
18 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.
19 Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.

Before we are told to take a look at our marriage, we are told to look up to Jesus and in our lives at what he has done. 3:1,12

Colossians 3:1 (KJV 1900)
1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
Colossians 3:12 (KJV 1900)

Marriage can be more than just surviving. It can be wonderful ministry and bring glory to God. / Ron & Nicole Taylor Marriage is my greatest opportunity to demonstrate the glory of God to this world.
Maximum Glory - minimal expectatsions
If that matters than what we say will matter. If not, than you have settled for a much lesser version of what God intended for you to have in marriage.
Marriage is made to display the grace of God.
Ephesians 5:31–32 (KJV 1900)
31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
If we do not first see ourselves and other believers as saints of God then none of our relationships on earth will be correct.
If you want to do something meaningful and glorious with your life, you will do it in and through your marriage, if you are married or you won’t do it at all.
Put on v.12a Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved,
Your secure position with God.
Specifically, when I see and believe that God has graciously brought security to me (before Him/God) in the Person of Jesus Christ, I don't have to force my wife to do anything that would cause me to be secure. The security I have in the Lord frees me to graciously live towards my wife in a committed way: leaving, cleaving, and weaving. The fact you have been set apart through the Word and made holy. You are deeply loved by the Father.
This means that a gospel-secure Christian is not always going around pointing out the flaws of their partner but they are humbly seeking to see the gospel lived out in their own lives.

The Gospel creates personal characteristics in our lives that affects every relationship we have. 3:12,13

the world must think it is the oddest thing that a decision made in my home as a 9 year old boy (salvation) would have the greatest influence on my marriage / bowels of mercy
sit of emotions in the gut cultivate compassion in my life
kindness / speaks of more than doing right but how we do it
different ways in which a way person does something / getting Thatcher a hair cut & yelled at the lady
Kindness: This is goodness that is expressed in kind acts. It is a kindness that God has shown to us in Christ and now is to be manifested to others
Titus 3:4 (KJV 1900)
4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,
The Christian should understand this better than any other group. Look at Jesus. God resists the proud - gives grace to the humble.
Humility & Meekness
Next you see humility. Philippians 2:3, 8 3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. help to understand this word by reminding us that it is a way that someone values the interest of others over their own interests. It is an inward quality that results in an outward meekness (Colossians 3:12). Meekness
strength under control horse led by the bit Moses was called meek Meekness is gentleness, and it is too closely linked to humility to separate the two (Ephesians 4:2). 2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; the inner man before God as well as the the outer man before others.
Meekness: “Gentleness” the opposite of arrogance and self-assertiveness, is the special mark of the man who has a delicate consideration for the rights and feelings of others. “willingness to make concessions”

Quote on Forgiveness
“In a word, live together in the forgiveness of your sins, for without it no human fellowship, least of all a marriage, can survive. Don’t insist on your rights, don’t blame each other, don’t judge or condemn each other, don’t find fault with each other, but accept each other as you are, and forgive each other every day from the bottom of your hearts…”
― Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Letters and Papers from Prison
There are times there is no earthly reason to forgive someone. STOP looking for an earthly reason. Look to God for a purpose.

It's easy to ACT like a Christian. it's much harder to REACT like one.

35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
John 13:35 The mark of discipleship to Him, which men in the world will most readily recognize and acknowledge, is in the manifestation of our temper and conduct towards others.

When we “put on charity” we can expect peace, unity, and thankfulness to be the defining characteristics of our relationships. 3:14,15

Love is often the bond we are missing in our relationship.
Spiritual oneness.
11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.
How?
John 17:8 For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me;
Same is seen here!
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
We will have the same heart.
15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.

In living out the Gospel in our marriage we will be able to overcome the temptations that come as a result of the fall. We will have a marriage that displays the joy found in being reconciled to God. 3:18-19

In Genesis 1:28-29 God blessed Adam and Eve. This blessing spanned the significant areas of life:
• The marriage relationship 1:28
• Family 1:28
• Our relationship to the rest of creation 1:28
• Our physical sustenance 1:29
Genesis 1:28–29 (KJV 1900)
28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
But now, in Genesis 3:14-19, every area of blessing is impacted by God's judgement on sin.
Food now becomes difficult to obtain 3:17-19
Survival becomes a heavy burden laid upon the man specifically, whereas in Genesis 1 the blessing of sustenance was a shared gift.
•Dominion over the earth now becomes dangerous 3:15, and difficult 3:17-19.
The bearing and rearing of children becomes very painful 3:16a
The marriage relationship changes to a relationship of domination and desire 3:16b
