Sermon

Our Only Hope is Found in Christ.

Psalm 90

Introduction

Funerals aren’t really for the dead, but for the living. Those who have passed don’t hear us; our words are for us, to provide comfort to the hurting. Though I didn’t know Kenny Wayne, I want to provide some comfort to you from Psalm 90.
This is the only psalm written by Moses, which makes it the earliest recorded psalm by about 400 years. It’s “a prayer of Moses,” and it reads like a prayer. It reads like it’s written by a man who’s tired. You would be, too, if you were walking in the wilderness for forty years.
Life has a way of wearing us out. We get tired. Maybe some of you today are tired. And with good reason. We’re all dying. In fact...

Death is an inevitable certainty.

Immediate Scriptural Support
Psalm 90:3 “3 You return mankind to the dust, saying, “Return, descendants of Adam.””
Psalm 90:5-6 “5 You end their lives; they sleep. They are like grass that grows in the morning— 6 in the morning it sprouts and grows; by evening it withers and dries up.”
Psalm 90:10 “10 Our lives last seventy years or, if we are strong, eighty years. Even the best of them are struggle and sorrow; indeed, they pass quickly and we fly away.”
As we age, the inevitable certainty of death begins to wear us down. As the body incrementally breaks down, we are forced to acknowledge that we are mortal.
Moses, who lived to the advanced age of 120, concedes that the average span of life is about 70. Even with our advanced medical technology, the average age of death in the US is 77.3 years old.
I’d like to encourage you with this thought: you will die, and sooner than you think. Now that may sound like a discouraging thought, but it’s better to acknowledge reality than to live in a fantasy world. Solomon said it this way in Ecclesiastes 7:2-4,
Ecclesiastes 7:2–4 CSB
2 It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting, since that is the end of all mankind, and the living should take it to heart. 3 Grief is better than laughter, for when a face is sad, a heart may be glad. 4 The heart of the wise is in a house of mourning, but the heart of fools is in a house of pleasure.
Transition: There is a second thought I want you to consider: why do we die? Why is death an inevitable reality? Why did it come for Kenny Wayne? And why will it come for you and me?

Sin is the terrible reality.

Immediate Scriptural Support: Psalm 90:7-8 “7 For we are consumed by your anger; we are terrified by your wrath. 8 You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence.”
Other Scriptural Support: Romans 6:23 “23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
I’m not saying Kenny Wayne was a particularly bad person. I’m saying we’re all particularly bad people. As the Scripture says in Romans 3:10-18,
Romans 3:10–18 CSB
10 as it is written: There is no one righteous, not even one. 11 There is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. 12 All have turned away; all alike have become worthless. There is no one who does what is good, not even one. 13 Their throat is an open grave; they deceive with their tongues. Vipers’ venom is under their lips. 14 Their mouth is full of cursing and bitterness. 15 Their feet are swift to shed blood; 16 ruin and wretchedness are in their paths, 17 and the path of peace they have not known. 18 There is no fear of God before their eyes.
From the very beginning in the Garden of Eden, every person has died because of their own sin.
Transition: And that’s what makes the gospel of Jesus Christ so glorious! We have hope for life after our inevitable deaths not because we are good people, because we aren’t. We have hope for a future life because a man died for sins not His own. An innocent man died for the guilty. A just man died for the unjust. Jesus died for you.

Christ is our Only Security.

We all want to know that heaven is our home. But how do you make that hope sure? How can you secure that good future? Does it happen automatically? Is being a good person good enough? We’ve just seen that no one is good. We must turn all of our hope on God and His Son, Christ Jesus.
Immediate Support:
Psalm 90:1 “1 Lord, you have been our refuge in every generation.”
Psalm 90:13 “13 Lord—how long? Turn and have compassion on your servants.”
Other Support
Romans 5:8 “8 But God proves his own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” This is the compassion of which Moses spoke.
John 3:16 “16 For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.”
Exodus 33:14 “14 And he replied, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”” And Jesus said in Matthew 11:28 “28 “Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Appeal
Are you tired? Tired of wondering if you’re good enough (you’re not)? Tired of trying to do enough to just maybe persuade God to let you into Heaven (you can’t)? Tired of living this sin-cursed life without God (you shouldn’t)?
Believe the gospel of Christ Jesus, be saved, and secure your future with God.
“How can I do this, pastor?” Romans 10:9-10
Romans 10:9–10 CSB
9 If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 One believes with the heart, resulting in righteousness, and one confesses with the mouth, resulting in salvation.

Graveside

Ecclesiastes 12:7 “7 and the dust returns to the earth as it once was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.”
Ecclesiastes 12:13 “13 When all has been heard, the conclusion of the matter is this: fear God and keep his commands, because this is for all humanity.”
Father, we return Kenny Wayne’s body to the dust from which you formed it, and his soul to You.
