Why God wants humility

Last week:

Leadership - humility
Who are the people and where are the places you have leadership - Who is a leader and when
Are you clothed with humility when you walk in?
1 Peter 5:6–11 ESV
6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. 8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 11 To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
Why does God want us to be humble?
Next week we talk about How to stay humble.

vs 6 - Humble yourself

The Wisconsin bucks won the 2021 NBA Finals this year and after they had lost game 1 & 2 they won game 3 and in the deciding few seconds left in the 4 quarter of the 4th game there is young man who is only 26, who made a black that sealed the game for his time. MSN sports reported,
“The 26-year-old’s heroic block of Suns seven-footer DeAndre Ayton in the waning moments of Wednesday night’s Game 4 could go down as one of the great defensive stops in Finals history, rivaling a play by then-Cavaliers superstar LeBron James.
Take a look at his post game conference and the wisdom this guy has on humility

This young man says the living in the present is the key to staying humble.
He is concerned with performance, but Christians have a different motive.
Look what Peter says:
Humble yourself, under God’s mighty hand
Judgment
Protection
Why?
Humble yourself, so that at the proper time He may exalt you.
Pride - I will exalt myself - humility God will exalt me
When is the proper time? Jesus says, Luke 14:8-11
Luke 14:8–11 ESV
8 “When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest someone more distinguished than you be invited by him, 9 and he who invited you both will come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this person,’ and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. 10 But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you. 11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
When the host says
AKA - it’s not your choice so don’t worry about it.
Why does God want us to be humble? Doing good requires we are present.
What is stands in the way of us being present?

vs 7 - Anxieties Consumes us

We can’t protect yourself from Anxieties
There is nothing you can really do on your own to escape anxieties
Anxieties can dominate our life. And can end up being proud. I have been hurt before and I won't let that happen. So we start running scenarios through to safeguard.
Researcher Lucas LaFreniere, Ph.D. sudied worry and anxieties -
In his study on worry, participants were asked to record their worries and how they caused distress and interfered with their lives. Each night at 10 pm, they reported how much time they spent thinking on each specific worry throughout the day. Then, 20 days after that period, they reviewed each entry and reported whether any of the worries had become true.
Dr. LaFreniere’s study found that in his survey of worrisome people, 91.4 percent of their worries never actually happened.
Dr. LaFreniere said, “This is what breaks my heart about worry. It makes you miserable in the present moment to try and prevent misery in the future. For chronic worriers, this process leads them to be continually distressed all their lives in order to avoid later events that never happen. Worry sucks the joy out of the ‘here and now.’”
Why does God want us to be humble? Doing good requires we are present.
So what do we do with them?
Peter says, Cast all your anxieties (cares that keep you up at night, am I good husband & father) on him - because he cares
How do we stop the madness?
CAST - Lit. throw upon - to put the responsibility on
Prayer
Memorizing scripture
Counseling - someone who points you to God
Cast your cares because he cares for you
Our cares vs His cares
1) Our cares - Food, Shelter, and Love
More like, am I doing enough?
Have I already blown it?
Do I have worth?
These anxieties can be what chokes out God’s word.
Mark 4 Jesus talks about the sower
some feel along the path
some on rocky ground
some on good soil
Mark 4:7 ESV
7 Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain.
Mark 4:19 ESV
19 but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.
How do I become or remain the good soil?
Cast all your anxieties on him
2) His cares
Gen 1-2 he took good care of us
Mercy
Love
Grace
Forgiveness
Why? because God is aware and concerned about what his people are going through
So stay faithful to God
Do you believe God truly cares for you?
Jesus died for you and rose again for you.
Preach the message backward
Because God cares for me
He wants me to give him all my cares and anxieties
I don’t have to be consumed with it
I can be humble because - God wants me to be present and live with him.
