1 Kings 19:9–18 KJV 1900
And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah? And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away. And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah? And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away. And the Lord said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria: And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room. And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay: and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay. Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.
a. What are you doing here Elijah? (19:9b)
i. Elijah gets to this cave and lodges there and the Bible says that “the Word of the Lord came to him” there.
1. We cannot go anywhere to be out of the reach of God’s eye, His arm, and His Word.
a. Psalms 139:1-12
i. You know what I love about reading David’s Psalms?
ii. Often when you read the Psalms of David, he writes as if he and God are the only two beings in the universe.
iii. David had such an intimate relationship with God, and he needed that kind of relationship all through-out his life.
2. God will take care of His out-casts and those that for His sake are driven out from society.
a. He will find, own, and gather with everlasting loving-kindness.
b. John could have identified with this as he was banished to the island of Patmos.
c. But there he experienced a “revelation” from God and He showed John amazing things.
d. No doubt at all that God met with Him there on that Island just as He had met with Moses on Sinai and Elijah in that cave.
ii. The question God asks Elijah, “What doest thou here, Elijah?”.
1. God asked him in verse 9 and again in verse 13.
2. This was a reproof.
a. God reproved him for fleeing.
i. It’s as if God was saying, “Why are you so far from home? Why are you fleeing from Jezebel? Could you not depend on my almighty power for your protection?”
b. God rebuked him for lodging here.
i. God asked Elijah why he was “here” in this cave.
ii. Is this where a prophet belongs?
iii. Is this a time for retreat, when the people are in such great need of you?
iv. Each time God sent Elijah somewhere in the past two chapter he was able to be used of God to help those near him.
1. When God sent him to Zerepath he helped the widow and her son.
2. When God sent him to Ahab he proved God true and Baal false on Mount Carmel.
3. But here he had no opportunity to do good or help anyone.
v. It would do us much good to stop and ask ourselves often if we are where God wants us to be in life.
1. Not necessarily location, but in what we are doing where we are at.
2. Are you where God wants you to be right now?
3. Are you doing what God wants you to be doing right now?
4. Are you fulfilling God’s will in your life, or is it only your will that you are living for?
