As our introduction to 1Peter, we are told the letter is from Peter, an apostle of Christ and addressed to Christ followers who have been dispersed throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia. Peter knows his identity and does not walk in the mistakes of his past. He begins with the reminder that while the people of Israel are God’s chosen, the church in whole are His people. The rich inheritance that is only found in Christ by way of His great mercy, has given us redemption, salvation and hope that will never fail and can never be taken away. In fact, the protection that comes from God alone is a reminder that we are safe event when the circumstances try to tell us otherwise. The resurrection of Christ, that which has not only saved us but has given us true life and hope will never be taken away, our inheritance will remain. This encouragement is timely as we are reminded that our eyes need to remain fixed on Him as we walk through various trials. Knowing that we are in His protection, the power of God is my protection. With such security, why would there be reason to fret? We are a people of hope and for that we rejoice. The creator of the world, the One who knew everything before it even was is the one providing protections and security. We ought to be at rest while we stand on guard, while we are in battle. What other Kingdom would this truth be found in?
Further, Peter admonishes followers of Christ to be imitators of Him, to be holy, as He is holy, continue on in Christ, preparing for what is coming, refusing to be caught up in whatever lusts of the world that once held believers in bondage and keep us from looking like Christ. The blood of Christ paid the price of redemption and ought not be taken lightly. The reminder of who God is and what Christ has done ought to result in fear of God in our lives. The faith and hope continue to propel us forward as our eyes remain on Him.
What a beautiful and encouraging reminder for all believers in this hour.
