ME:
Teacher - Student relationship
My Favorite High School Teacher?
WHY?
Transition Statement: Do you have a Favorite HS Teacher
WE:
What made that person your favorite?
The grades you received?
The free time they gave?
How they slacked on you?
I believe what made my Favorite HS teacher and you favorite teacher our FAVORITES was because they were loving, caring, and hard on us and strict.
You were taught things and you were corrected on things.
Whether you believe this or not, this is affective .....
TEACH & ADMONISH
It’s Biblical!
Transition Statement: Paul point this out in the letter he writes to the Colossian church.
GOD:
Colossians 3:16–17 (ESV)
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly..”
“word of Christ” - the teachings of Christ (Anything to do with Jesus.)
“richly” - Super Abundantly
“dwell in you” - permission thing (Spirit - indwelling person)
“Teaching” (Didaskontes)
It is (present) (active) which means the subject is doing this and its progressive/continual
In the ACTIVE this word is translated in English as “To teach / To inform / To instruct / To demonstrate.
This word is mostly used in the context of a relationship between teacher/student.
What Paul makes clear is that he is not concerned so much about the Content but the manner of teaching ....
Paul is focusing in on the practical exhortation required of all members of the church. (This is what all believers should be doing .... Teaching)
You can almost say he assumed everyone knew what the content was (JESUS)
What Paul was focusing in on was for ALL to “Teach .... one another.”
(YOUR TEACHING ALL THE TIME) whether you believe it or not.
“Admonishing” (Noutheteo)
Again, its Present and active (which means the subject is doing this and its progressive/continual)
Translated: To warn, to advise, to admonish
By admonishing, warning, or advising, .... a person can be redirected from wrong ways and their behavior corrected.
The other thing Paul was focusing in on was for ALL to “Admonish one another.”
Teaching and Admonishing should be something done “OUT OF LOVE.”
I read a quote the other day ..... “We are what we love.” - Erik Erikson
Do we love Jesus enough to teach?
Are we teaching what we love?
Do we love Jesus enough to admonish?
Are we warning people for Jesus (The one we love)?
Are we advising people for Jesus (The one we love)?
Paul finishes this section of Verse 16 with this ..... “in all wisdom”
We are to teach and admonish one another with all wisdom.
Long story short ...... We, as the church of Jesus Christ, should be bear witness to Christ in the world.
HOW?
By teaching and admonishing.
So if its true that we are always teaching and we are teaching what we love ....
We are what we love!
Transitional Statement: What do you LOVE?
YOU:
Some people might be saying, “I am not a teacher.”
Teaching is something that can be done without words.
"Preach the Gospel at all times. When necessary, use words."
St Francis of Assisi (Didn’t say it)
No one has claimed this quote so ...... I WILL.
Let’s change it up a little ...... “Teach Christ at all times and when necessary, use words.”
Teach one another ......
Teach your family .....
Teach your work place .....
Teach your community .....
I know some of you might be saying, OKAY IM IN!
What about admonishing?
No one really likes to think about this.
But Paul exhorts the listeners to “admonish as well.”
This is always looked at in a negative (harsh) way.
But remember what the definition of this word stated .....
by doing this a person can be redirected from wrong ways and their behavior corrected.
This can be done in a very simplistic way.
I will not lie, sometimes it not easy.
Transition Statement: We are instructed by Jesus, through Paul, to do these things.
ME:
You might be the only Jesus someone may see in their lifetime.
You might be the last Jesus they see before their life ends.
We are what we Love ....
Share the Gospel ..... Love so that others may love
You might be thinking of a person who needs the love of Jesus.
You might be thinking of your family who you desire they see the love of Jesus in you.
You might be thinking coworker ..... a family member .....
Whatever the case may be .....
What do you , we as a church join together today and pray for the people … families … friends
And lets ask God to help us teach and direct (advise) people about Jesus.
