Things Can Seem Daunting

joshua 24:2 “And Joshua said to all the people, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Long ago, your fathers lived beyond the Euphrates, Terah, the father of Abraham and of Nahor; and they served other gods.”
Joshua 24:14 ““Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord.”
Abram served other gods. He grew up in a polytheistic country. In the belief, families began to adopt a specific god to give them protection and guidance. This god was their “family god.” The one they served. The one that they prayed to. They one that was supposed to be their own personal god. A god was tied to objects or land masses. You had the sun god, a god of certain rivers, of the sky and the ocean. You had a god of rain and of the harvest, you had a god of specific mountains. These gods were tied to things. The one true God is unique. He is tied to nothing, but everything is tied to Him.
When God told Abram to leave his father and his land, this meant that Abram was giving up his protection, his inheritance, his notoriety, and above all the influences of the other false gods.
Notice that God said He would bless who blessed Abram and curse who cursed him. Why is that? Because Abram was stepping out in faith, and placing it all on God. Shaking loose everything else. God was rewarding Abram. He was rebuilding a great name for Abram, but this time his name was tied to God.
All of the gods that Abrams countrymen prayed to could do nothing. They could not help out in times of trouble. They could not provide support or protection. They could not even provided the most basic necessities in life. God took Abram away from the grasps of false religion, and gave him a country, He gave him riches, He gave him a nation (that’s a BIG family), and He made Abram popular. God proved Himself to be true, and to ultimately be the one and only truth.
