David & Goliath

Background of David… before Goliath. The context makes the defeat that much more awesome!

-goes the whole way back to the Exodus! The Israelites are freed from slavery in Egypt, and sent towards their “promised land” and all they can manage to do along the way is screw it up!

-Exodus 32:7

Exodus 32:7 ESV

And the Lord said to Moses, “Go down, for your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves.

-God has literally just removed His people from hundreds of years of slavery, bondage, oppression. Promised them a land of “milk and honey” and they are barely across the Red Sea and they are already corrupting themselves!

-this leads to 14 generations of the nation of Israel fighting wars with nations like the Amelikites, Caananites, Assyrians, Phillistines

-so all this leads us to the book of Samuel. Check out this video...

So we are introduced in 1 Samuel to 3 main characters

-Samuel grows up as a prophet and leader of Israel, meanwhile the Phillistines are rising to power as the nemesis of Israel

-Israel continues this idea of thinking they know whats best for them (goes the whole way back to Genesis!) and end up having the ark of the covenant stolen from them

for those that don’t know, the ark of the covenant was essentially required for the israelites to be able to experience God. Without it, in their eyes, His presence was no longer available. 1 Samuel 4:22

So now another nation, essentially has control over Israel, and is forcing them to do what they want! Where have we seen this before??!! Read 1 Samuel 5

So God brings on plagues to the enemy of israel which leads to the Ark being returned. Where have we seen this before??!!
