Trust God not man
Trust God not man
1 All the congregation of the people of Israel moved on from the wilderness of Sin by stages, according to the commandment of the Lord, and camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. 2 Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?” 3 But the people thirsted there for water, and the people grumbled against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?” 4 So Moses cried to the Lord, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me.” 5 And the Lord said to Moses, “Pass on before the people, taking with you some of the elders of Israel, and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. 6 Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink.” And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 And he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested the Lord by saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
—> Have you ever been asked to do something that is outside of your scope?
—> Often people ask other people, other human beings, finite creatures, to do something that only God is capable of.
—> In our text today the people of Israel are yet again without something, last week it was food this week it is water.
—> And they use the same tactic to get what they want, I like to call it the toddler tactic.
—> We’re gonna die. Everyone is gonna die. We should have stayed in Egypt. I’m so thirsty I could drink a whole sea.
—> You would think by this point they would have learned that God is going to take care of them and provide for them if they will only trust, but sadly no.
—> Instead of trusting God they complain to Moses. They expect Moses to provide something for them.
—> But as great as Moses is, Moses is only human.
—> Exodus 17:2
2 Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?”
—> Moses throws this back to God because he knows he can’t do anything about it.
—> Moses realizes where the power and help is coming from. Moses realizes who is in control, and who is really leading the people of Israel. Sadly, the people don’t.
—> So I ask you the question today… who are you asking for help? who is leading your life?
—> The church/ Sunday School answer is obvious here...
—> God/Jesus
But really who is it?
who are we trying to get validation from?
who are we trying to get to solve our problems?
because no matter who it is, they will never be good enough
they will never have all the answers or everything you need
—> people cannot take the place of God
—> In John Ch. 4, we encounter another person looking for water
—> Its the Samaritan woman at the well
