I want you guys to think of a time when you heard a sermon or biblical message that really moved you.
Q: How has that sermon changed you since?
We often hear sermon’s and messages on a regular basis. How do we make sure that we apply them to our life?
James 1:22–25 ESV
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
Q: What are you guys seeing here?
Being only hearers of the word and not doers of the word. The passage says that you are “deceiving yourself”. You are lying to yourself.
What is this idea of a person seeing themselves in a mirror.
What does a mirror show? It is a reflection of who you really are.
The bible is often compared to a mirror which shows the true nature of humankind. The passage does this exact thing.
James 1:25 ESV
But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
