John 3:22-36

The Baptism of John

v.22-28 Not required for salvation
1 Corinthians 1:10–17 NKJV
10 Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. 11 For it has been declared to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of Chloe’s household, that there are contentions among you. 12 Now I say this, that each of you says, “I am of Paul,” or “I am of Apollos,” or “I am of Cephas,” or “I am of Christ.” 13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? 14 I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15 lest anyone should say that I had baptized in my own name. 16 Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas. Besides, I do not know whether I baptized any other. 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect.

The problem of Baptism

John 3:25–26 NKJV
25 Then there arose a dispute between some of John’s disciples and the Jews about purification. 26 And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, He who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified—behold, He is baptizing, and all are coming to Him!”
V.25 John baptized for repentance… the Jew baptized for purification

The proclamation of Baptism

John 3:27–28 NKJV
27 John answered and said, “A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven. 28 You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, ‘I am not the Christ,’ but, ‘I have been sent before Him.’

The illustration

John 3:29–30 NKJV
29 He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is fulfilled. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease.
Bridegroom is Jesus
Bride is the church
The Friend is John the Baptist (The best man in the wedding)
Luke 1:42–44 NKJV
42 Then she spoke out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43 But why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For indeed, as soon as the voice of your greeting sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.

The Teaching from John

The Preeminence of Jesus v. 31
The Testimony of Jesus v32-33
The Belief in Jesus
v.34 We receive the fullness of spirit
v.35 We believe or do not believe - choice is between everlasting life or everlasting death

John 4:1-26

Everlasting life (John 4:14) = Kingdom of God
John 4 -> Water = Kingdom of God

Five things about the Water

1. Place of water

John 4:4 NKJV
4 But He needed to go through Samaria.
Jesus needed to go through Samaria… why?
Jews hated the Samarians
1st Captivity (722BC) and the Jews intermingled with the Assyrians
Released
1st wave (538 BC) with Zerubbabel and 43,000 released by Cyrus the King of Persia
Jews wanted to help Zerubbabel to rebuild the temple but Zerubbabel said no because the Samarians worshipped pagan idols 2Kings 17:24-33 . As a result, the went back to Neopolis (Shechem) near Sychar and on Mount Gerizim they built their own temple. The temple on Mount Gerizim was destroyed in
2nd wave (458 BC) led by Ezra
3rd wave (3/14/445 BC) led by Nehemiah
Acts 1:8 NKJV
8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
John 4:5-6 is the sixth hour which is 6 PM for the Jews… but for Jesus this is 12 Noon

2. Person at the well

John 4:7–9 NKJV
7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” 8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. 9 Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.
Woman
She is talking to men - Shameful
According to John 4:18, she is a very immoral woman
Jesus looks past her past history and asks for a drink of water

3. Problem at the well (John 4:10-20)

John 4:10 NKJV
10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
The gift of God is Salvation
Romans 6:23 NKJV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
John 7:37 NKJV
37 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.
Revelation 21:6 NKJV
6 And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts.
John 4:11-12 The woman is speaking/looking physically
John 4:13-14 Jesus is speaking/looking spiritually
1 Thessalonians 5:23 NKJV
23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Body - Thirsts for water
Soul - Thirsts for Love
Spirit - Thirsts for God
John 4:15-18 - The woman is living in sin. Jesus points that out to her.
Genesis 3:9 NKJV
9 Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?”
1 John 1:9 NKJV
9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
John 4:19-20 The woman was not ready to confess
She changes the subject - to one of religion!

4. Prediction at the well (John 4:21-24)

Where -John 4:21 It is not about the place that you worship the Father, it is about the heart.
Who - John 4:22 Salvation is of Jesus, the Messiah
How - John 4:23-24 How we worship? It is in spirit and truth… it is about the attitude of our hearts.

5. Proclamation at the well (John 4:25-26)

John 4:26 in Greek said to her “ I AM that speaks to you.” The He is in italics and was added .
John 8:12 NKJV
12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
John 10:9 NKJV
9 I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.
John 11:15 NKJV
15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, that you may believe. Nevertheless let us go to him.”
John 14:6 NKJV
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
Exodus 3:14 NKJV
14 And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”
Isaiah 55:1 NKJV
1 “Ho! Everyone who thirsts, Come to the waters; And you who have no money, Come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk Without money and without price.

John 4:27-42

The Response to the Well

By the disciples
John 4:27 NKJV
27 And at this point His disciples came, and they marveled that He talked with a woman; yet no one said, “What do You seek?” or, “Why are You talking with her?”
They marvelled at Jesus speaking to a woman
2. By the Woman
John 4:28–29 NKJV
28 The woman then left her waterpot, went her way into the city, and said to the men, 29 “Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?”
The woman left her waterpot. The water pot in the culture was a picture of life. The woman forsook all to follow Jesus.
She also told others.
John 1:40–42 NKJV
40 One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus. Now when Jesus looked at him, He said, “You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas” (which is translated, A Stone).
John 1:43–45 NKJV
43 The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, “Follow Me.” 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
John 4:39 NKJV
39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all that I ever did.”
The woman impacted the city - reminds me of Jonah in Ninevah.
3. By Jesus
John 4:31–39 NKJV
31 In the meantime His disciples urged Him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” 32 But He said to them, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.” 33 Therefore the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought Him anything to eat?” 34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work. 35 Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest! 36 And he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. 37 For in this the saying is true: ‘One sows and another reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have entered into their labors.” 39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all that I ever did.”
John 4:34 - The food of Jesus - What is God’s will
None will perish
2 Peter 3:9 NKJV
9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
All will be saved
Romans 11:26 NKJV
26 And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: “The Deliverer will come out of Zion, And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob;
4. Response of the Samarians
John 4:40–42 NKJV
40 So when the Samaritans had come to Him, they urged Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. 41 And many more believed because of His own word. 42 Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world.”

John 4:43-45

Christ is received by the Galileans

Faith in Jesus
1st sign was John 2:11 Turning water into wine
2nd sign is John 4:50 as Jesus heals the nobleman’s son.
Both of these first two signs occurred in Cana of Galilee
1. No respect for Jesus. John4:44
Honor= Respect
This account is in all 4 of the Gospels
No honor is from a lack of faith
v.45 They received Jesus
Received= Greet, be hospitable
John 2:23 NKJV
23 Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name when they saw the signs which He did.
Seeing signs and wonders does NOT bring forth a saving, everlasting faith.
Luke 16:31 NKJV
31 But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.’ ”
John 20:29 NKJV
29 Jesus said to him, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
Hebrews 11:1 NKJV
1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
2 Corinthians 5:7 NKJV
7 For we walk by faith, not by sight.
Faith is what we cannot see
2 Corinthians 4:18 NKJV
18 while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
2. Having faith in Jesus John 4:45-54
Nobleman went to Jesus v.46-47
Capernaum is about 20 miles from Cana
Nobleman implored Jesus V. 47
Implored is to ask, request, beseeching
It is in the perfect tense, he kept asking… look at John 4:49
Jesus prayed three time in the garden of Gethsemane
Matthew 26:44 NKJV
44 So He left them, went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.
3. The Nobleman believed Him John 4:50
John 4:50 NKJV
50 Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your son lives.” So the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went his way.
He man believed the word hearing from the Lord… Seeing is not believing.
Romans 10:17 NKJV
17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Romans 1:16 NKJV
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.
Signs and wonders do not bring us to faith
4. His Obedience
v.50 Jesus told him to go and the man went.
He put feet to the faith
James 2:14–26 NKJV
14 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. 18 But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. 19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! 20 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? 22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? 23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of God. 24 You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only. 25 Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way? 26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
5. Peace in Jesus
John 4:51–53 NKJV
51 And as he was now going down, his servants met him and told him, saying, “Your son lives!” 52 Then he inquired of them the hour when he got better. And they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.” 53 So the father knew that it was at the same hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives.” And he himself believed, and his whole household.
V52. Notice it says yesterday! So apparently the man spent the night in Cana… This is not based on the size of his faith, but rather the object in which he placed his faith.
There is no greater object to put our faith than in Jesus.
6. He told others about Jesus
John 4:53 NKJV
53 So the father knew that it was at the same hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives.” And he himself believed, and his whole household.
His whole household believed, just like the woman at the well.
