 The Word of Life

 Setting of Letter

Focus on Jesus only in last 100 years

Focus on Christ prevalent in Church's history

 Docetism

 Denied humanity of Jesus

Said He only appeared to be human

 Denied His death

 John's Stresses

He is from the beginning, 1 Jn. 1:1, cf. Jn. 1:1. He is the Word of life, 1 Jn. 1:1 f.; 5:20. He has also appeared in history as a man, 1 Jn. 1:1–3. Through Him the witnesses who stand behind 1 Jn. have fellowship with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ, and they pass this on to those who pay heed to their witness, 1 Jn. 1:3

 Divinity and Humanity

 We need both

 Theologise before you moralise

 Jesus' True Nature

… of God and Man the Son

 The eternal Christ

That which was from the beginning … (1 John 1:1a, NIV)

 The earthly Christ

… which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched–this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. (1 John 1:1b, NIV)

Cannot separate human and divine natures

Jesus — the Word Made Flesh

 Relationships

 Wrapped up in each other

Cannot separate human and divine relationships

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another. (1 John 1:7, NIV)

If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. (1 John 4:20, NIV)

 … with God

… our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. (1 John 1:3, NIV)

That we might experience fellowship with both the Father and Son

 … with one another

We write this to make our joy complete. (1 John 1:4, NIV)

That we might share our joy with one another.
