Mark 4:21-25
Mark 4:21-25
Theme: The Servant at Seaside
Key verse: v.11
41 verses; 923 words
Grade level: 5.1
1. Preaching the Parables. vs.1-34
2. Stilling the Storm. vs.35-41
Here are the PARTS that reveal the purpose of growth in the born again believer.
I. The Purpose of Light. vs.21-22
I. The Purpose of Light. vs.21-22
It is to enlighten. v.21
21 And he said unto them, Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? and not to be set on a candlestick?
Modern versions (ESV, NIV, NRSV, NKJV, HCSB, RSV, ASV, NASB, AMP) change “candle” to “lamp” as to better render, etc. Two problems with this:
Translations that pretend to be literal word-for-word reveal they are not but look to associate with other new translations.
The reason they try this is to say it is incorrect to say candle but we are talking about a Saviour that is accepted largely in part by poor people. People that are poor own more candles due to reusableness.
It is to expose. v.22
22 For there is nothing hid, which shall not be manifested; neither was any thing kept secret, but that it should come abroad.
The light reveals…
Sins.
But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the LORD: and be sure your sin will find you out.
Sources.
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
Satan.
2 Corinthians 11:12–15 (AV)
12 But what I do, that I will do, that I may cut off occasion from them which desire occasion; that wherein they glory, they may be found even as we.
13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.
14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.
II. The Pupose of Listening. v.23
II. The Pupose of Listening. v.23
23 If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.
Twice as much hearing as speaking.
James 3:1–8 (AV)
1 My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.
2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.
3 Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.
4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.
5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
Twice as much Bible reading as your petitions in prayer.
Listen to the Scriptures.
Talk to the Saviour.
III. The Purpose of Learning. vs.24-25
III. The Purpose of Learning. vs.24-25
You are responsible for your education. v.24
24 And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given.
Study what you read.
Study what you hear.
You are rewarded on your responsibilities. v.25
25 For he that hath, to him shall be given: and he that hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he hath.
What you know affects how far you go with the Lord.
When you plan to be ignorant you lose more than what you have.
Conclusion:
Are you ready for the Light?
Are you ready to Listen?
Are you ready to Learn?
