And they told him, “Joseph is still alive, and he is ruler over all the land of Egypt.” And his heart became numb, for he did not believe them. But when they told him all the words of Joseph, which he had said to them, and when he saw the wagons that Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of their father Jacob revived. And Israel said, “It is enough; Joseph my son is still alive. I will go and see him before I die.”
So Here goes Jacob to see his long lost son, but before he really even gets started He realizes that going and seeing Joseph though a good thing may not be Gods thing.
So many of us assume a good thing must be God. The reality is though that good thing may not be Gods will. It may just just be a distraction.
Ernest Shackleton was a British explorer who had the idea to cross the Antarctica. He wanted to be the first to do it. So he raised money and set out to do the impossible.
The Grass is rarely greener on the other side.
The Grass is rarely greener on the other side.
So Israel took his journey with all that he had and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac. And God spoke to Israel in visions of the night and said, “Jacob, Jacob.” And he said, “Here I am.” Then he said, “I am God, the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for there I will make you into a great nation. I myself will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also bring you up again, and Joseph’s hand shall close your eyes.”
Jacob has proven himself lacking in the parent of of year department but we see here that he loves Jehovah more than anything.
He sets out to Joseph but before he goes he visits Bersheeba where he offers sacrifices to the Lord to attain Gods will.
WHy you say? He wants to see his son. His son wants to see him. This is good! It must be God!
But we see Jacob stop and offer sacrifices Why? Because Jacob isn’t willing to trade the Eternal blessing of God for temporal happiness.
So many of us trade the blessing and favor of God for short term trinkets.
WE trade Gold for tin. It’s madness.
Trying to find happiness we easily made this concessions these decisions. Before we elevate this too high, I am talking practically day to day decision making.
Jacob here has a good thing in front of him but he understands what most fail to truly grasp. Gods blessing and favor is more valuable than anything on this earth.
Ernest Shackleton was a famous British Explorer, He was a national hero, and yet his best plans ended up crushed in Ice! If anyone could do this it was Ernest Shackleton. and he failed, not because he was dumb, but because he was human.
Do not project your will onto God
Do not project your will onto God
This is what most do when it comes to making decisions. Will it make me happy? If so Gods wants me happy. So I do it.
New car
New house
New Spouse
New Job
New vacation
You name it!
Here in lays the issue again. God goal is not to make you and I happy. Its to make you and I holy!
All these decisions if we are not careful will end up leading us into trouble.
So many peoples lives are shambles, not because God has it for them, or because they got a bad lot in life, but because they never consult God on anything.
Maybe if life gets bad enough they will pray, but the reason life falls apart in the first place for most is that we didn’t consult God in the beginning.
We take our will, think its Gods and then are surprised when things blow up!
Here is something that helps me out in Life. Assume you don’t know what to do. Ever! Seek God on all things.
in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

So the crew of the Endurance had been living on the ice for some time now and on Nov 21st 1915 when the Ice finally began the end of the ship. It squeezed it tighter and tighter, twisted it until the ship and the ice began making this eeery high pitch sounds.
As the those sounds comes from the ship and the ice the penguins that had been observing everything began to cry. So you have this chorus of ice cracking, a ship twisting into oblivion, and penguins crying. At this uproar the crew of the endurance began loosing their minds, declaring that they were all going to die!
We make mistakes and at times will shipwreck our own life. What do you do then?
Build an Altar. Seek the Lord Get in the Word and Allow God to speak into your life. Then do whatever His Word says.
Do what Jacob did when he was at a crossroads, He built an altar, worshiped God then Sought Gods counsel.
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
So what should you take away this morning?
Just Because its Good doesn’t mean its God
Do not project your will on to God
Sometimes Penguins will scream!
