Man of Lawlessness

“Keep Watch With Me” series

Last week the “Mystery of Lawless”
Why its called the mystery of lawlessness?
“Mystery of Lawlessness” - rebellion to God, revealed to those who follow Jesus, signs of the times made evident, intensifying with time. Those living for the ways of world cannot see this mystery!
Today the Lord wants to warn us about the “Man of Lawlessness”
Paul will be writing to the Thessalonian church and in Chapter 1
“Thessalonian Church” - growing in faith, growing love towards each other in the church, commended by Paul for perseverance in the midst of persecutions and afflictions, worthy of the kingdom of God for their suffering.
He starts in writing of chapter 2 with a warning, this is a church he just commended for growing faith, growing love, perseverance and so on.
2 Thessalonians 2: 1-2
2 Thessalonians 2:1–2 NASB95
Now we request you, brethren, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, that you not be quickly shaken from your composure or be disturbed either by a spirit or a message or a letter as if from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come.
For the Thessalonian church was being told Christ had already came back, they had found themselves being disturbed by another spirit. Paul warns them with this great passage, keep their composure for our time of the church as well, some very truthful encouraging words. He is saying do not be quickly shaken form what?
Composure (nous) - understanding, faculties of compromising feelings, perception or judging from the intellect.
His warning to the church- do not be disturbed, not quickly shaken, not deceived
2 Thessalonians 2: 3
2 Thessalonians 2:3 NASB95
Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction,
apostasy (apostasia) - falling away, abandonment, defection, rebellion
This man of lawlessness / son of destruction - what he will do
2 Thessalonians 2: 4
2 Thessalonians 2:4 NASB95
who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God.
2 Thessalonians 2: 6-7
2 Thessalonians 2:6–7 NASB95
And you know what restrains him now, so that in his time he will be revealed. For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only he who now restrains will do so until he is taken out of the way.
The man of Lawlessness is being restrained from what is described in previous verses - opposes and exalts himself above every god and object of worship, takes his seat in the temple displaying himself as God
The mystery of lawlessness is already at work - remember this is summed up as rebellion to God!
Romans 1 describes how this mystery of lawlessness has been at work and still is
Romans 1: 18-19
Romans 1:18–19 NASB95
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them.
Romans 1: 20
Romans 1:20 NASB95
For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.
Romans 1: 21-22
Romans 1:21–22 NASB95
For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools,
Romans 1: 23-24
Romans 1:23–24 NASB95
and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them.
Romans 1:25 NASB95
For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
Verse 26 Paul writes on that God will give these people over to their degrading passions
