Intro

last week- the induction of Saul as first king of Israel
following pretty people chasing donkeys
this week- the beginning of the kingship
who is really significant in all of this?

Saul Proclaimed King

what we saw last week- a cowardly king
men of valor go with him after he is chosen
not everyone is content with this king- maybe they are even justified in feeling that way
regardless of who Saul is, God has a point to make

Saul and the Ammonites

the threat of Nahash
the message of the oxen
three companies attack
the fate of the dissenters

Samuel’s Farewell

Samuel’s confirmation of character
The LORD who did all of these things
you should see what you have really done here
both you and the king follow
the thunder and rain
the LORD will not forsake and I will not stop praying for you

Application

its often extremely easy to do what seems like the right thing and have good reasoning to get you there
whats not easy is realizing that your motivation or the motivation of those you are with is not so just after all
Samuel calls the people to realize who is really behind their success before they do something rash and stupid and before they fall into the same failures as all of those who came before them
Like all of those before you, if you don’t stop and realize what your motivation really is, what all that you are doing is really moving toward, you’ll just be spiraling further away from God
