A Man with Authority

Read Mark 1:21-28
Mark 1:21–28 ESV
21 And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching. 22 And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. 23 And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, 24 “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” 25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” 26 And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him. 27 And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” 28 And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.
We meet Jesus the one who
Has authority in his teaching
Has authority over spirits
An authority that should be obeyed

Jesus Teaches With Authority

Look at Mark 1:21-22
Mark 1:21–22 ESV
21 And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching. 22 And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.
Remember Jesus has already established himself as a teacher
He has earned the right to walk into the synagogue and teach
Back in verse 14 and 15 he was proclaiming
Mark 1:15 ESV
15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
Then two weeks ago in verse 17
Mark 1:17 ESV
17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”
He called these men to follow him
Something a teacher doesn't usually do
this teacher had authority to teach
he was not a scribe
What’s a scribe
someone who has spent so much time writing the law they know it inside and out
jesus knew it better
we see these examples in the sermon on the mount look at Matthew 7:28-29
Matthew 7:28–29 ESV
And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.
Jesus knew the scriptures better
why because he wrote them
aslan example
he has authority to teach
he has authority over the spiritual realm
look at Mark 1:23-26
the spirit recognized him
he was known
jesus has the authority that should be obeyed
