Introduction

John continues to record things that point our attention to a profound truth. That is, that Jesus is The Son of God and that believing you may have life in His name (Jn 20:30-31).
Jesus was somewhere beyond the Jordan Jn 10:40 “And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was first baptizing, and He was staying there.”
Word had come to Him that “he whom You love is sick”
Jesus’ response is a bold one, “This sickness is not to end in death”

Text

John 11:17–26 NASB95
So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb four days. Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off; and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother. Martha therefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet Him, but Mary stayed at the house. Martha then said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. “Even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha said to Him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”

The Profound Declaration

“I am the resurrection and the life”

Jews were familiar with the concept of resurrection

Job 19:26 ““Even after my skin is destroyed, Yet from my flesh I shall see God;”
Ps 16:10 “For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol; Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay.”
Hos 13:14 “Shall I ransom them from the power of Sheol? Shall I redeem them from death? O Death, where are your thorns? O Sheol, where is your sting? Compassion will be hidden from My sight.”
Isa 25:8 “He will swallow up death for all time, And the Lord God will wipe tears away from all faces, And He will remove the reproach of His people from all the earth; For the Lord has spoken.”
Isa 26:19 “Your dead will live; Their corpses will rise. You who lie in the dust, awake and shout for joy, For your dew is as the dew of the dawn, And the earth will give birth to the departed spirits.”
Martha’s words, Jn 11:24 “Martha said to Him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.”” seem to indicate that the concept had been relegated to simply an event.
JESUS CLEARS THE AIR Jn 11:25-26 “Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?””
What does this statement teach us? How can this lead me to Hold On To Jesus?

Jesus has power over death

The Example
of Lazarus Jn 11:43-44.
of Himself Jn 20:1-2 (The empty tomb)
The Teachings of Jesus
Jn 2:19-21 “Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews then said, “It took forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?” But He was speaking of the temple of His body.” (1st Sign)
Jn 10:17-18 ““For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it again. “No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father.”” (last sign)
Teachings of the Apostles
Acts 2:24 ““But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power.”

APPLICATION

He was raised so that we can rise 1 Cor 15:20 “But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep.”
We don’t have to fear death anymore 1 Cor 15:54-55 “But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, “Death is swallowed up in victory. “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”” (Hosea 13)

Jesus has power to grant life

“loose Him and let him go”
The example of Lazarus was obvious. No tricks or gimmicks, the glory of God on display.
The teachings in the book of John Jn 10:10
John 10:10 NASB95
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

APPLICATION

Jn 1:14 “And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
Jn 3:16 ““For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”
Jn 4:14 “but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.””
Jn 5:24 ““Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.” ;47 ““But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?””
Jn 6:35-36 “Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst. “But I said to you that you have seen Me, and yet do not believe.”
Jn 8:12 “Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”” Jn 8:24 ““Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.””
Jn 10:25-28 “Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe; the works that I do in My Father’s name, these testify of Me. “But you do not believe because you are not of My sheep. “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand.”

DO YOU BELIEVE THIS??
