Pursuing Power
Pursuing Power
Power is one of those thing we kind of all want - to be in control of our lives
Power is intoxicating - we want more
Wars fought over gaining more power -empire after empire
We think if I had more power it would solve my problems
But it gets twisted and abused so often
The attempt to combine wisdom and power has only rarely been successful and then only for a short while. - Albert Einstein
If only there was someone I could trust with absolute power and has proved it
No matter my issue - it could be handled
That’s what I want to discuss today.
Jesus showed he has authority and power over all .
No matter what your facing today - Jesus is big enough
The question for us today is do I trust him with the process and outcome
He does desire what’s best for us
We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. For those he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.
Today I want to look at 3 areas where Jesus showed his power
Turn to Mark 5

What’s your problem?
This is the question today
What are you facing
Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
It’s a promise - we can bring everything and anything
Do you trust that?
I believe you can - because Jesus has the power.
1. He is the one who has power over the Devil
Be sober-minded, be alert. Your adversary the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour.
First part of Mark 5
Arrive on the shore -Gerasenes
Met with a man possessed - not just a demon - thousands of them
When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and knelt down before him. And he cried out with a loud voice, “What do you have to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you before God, don’t torment me!” For he had told him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” “What is your name?” he asked him. “My name is Legion,” he answered him, “because we are many.” And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the region.
1. He is the one who has power over the Devil
allows them to depart into pigs
They came to Jesus and saw the man who had been demon-possessed, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.
The people’s reaction - ask Jesus to leave
Jesus has all spiritual authority and power
A thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance.
2. He is the one who has power over disease.
He crosses back over - met by a crowd
One of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet and begged him earnestly, “My little daughter is dying. Come and lay your hands on her so that she can get well and live.”
2. He is the one who has power over disease.
Crowds pressing in, community leader desperate to get Jesus - even if its unpopular with his peers
In the crowd is a woman who had suffered so much
Now a woman suffering from bleeding for twelve years had endured much under many doctors. She had spent everything she had and was not helped at all. On the contrary, she became worse.
2. He is the one who has power over disease.
She thinks if I can only touch Him
This was dangerous for her - her disease had made her unclean
12 years she could touch or be touched - and she was in this crowd- she was desperate
Instantly her flow of blood ceased, and she sensed in her body that she was healed of her affliction.
I love the fact that Jesus stopped and acknowledged her
“Daughter,” he said to her, “your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be healed from your affliction.”
While he was still speaking, people came from the synagogue leader’s house and said, “Your daughter is dead. Why bother the teacher anymore?”
3. He is the one who has power over death.
Death is the final insult
Truth is finances, relationships, even health can all bounce back
Death is inevitable - it is the cost of us doing things our way instead of God’s
Maybe your like the the group gathered at the house.
He went in and said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but asleep.” They laughed at him, but he put them all outside. He took the child’s father, mother, and those who were with him, and entered the place where the child was.
3. He is the one who has power over death.
I will give you the other things - but death
Then he took the child by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum” (which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you, get up”). Immediately the girl got up and began to walk. (She was twelve years old.) At this they were utterly astounded.
3. He is the one who has power over death.
Not even death has power
Jesus Himself defeated death
What’s Your Problem?
What’s Your Problem?
What are you facing or dealing with?
I am not saying that it will be fixed right away or even ever.
There were many Jesus did not heal - I am saying you can trust Him
We cannot always trace God's hand, but we can always trust God's heart.
- Charles Spurgeon
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. I also saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared like a bride adorned for her husband. Then I heard a loud voice from the throne: Look, God’s dwelling is with humanity, and he will live with them. They will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them and will be their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; grief, crying, and pain will be no more, because the previous things have passed away.
To experience this future you have to trust Him today
What’s your problem - who are you trusting it with?
Pray
