Sermon: Only the weak survive

Romans 5:1–11 (ESV)

1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.

7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.

11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

peace-a stance before God, not at war with God

faith-certain, steadfast and steady belief without sight

Hebrews 11:1

c. hope - expectation

1.General feeling that something will certainly happen

2. Grounded in something or someone

suffering-

affliction, distress, torture, feelings of mental or physical pain, misery from affliction

Things we gain access to:

Peace-no more war with God

access to grace-God’s unmerited favor

rejoicing in hope-confidence that its all good

rejoicing in suffering- this only makes sense if the suffering is leading to a good

Suffering/Hope Cycle

Suffering sets off a chain of events that produce multiple things:

suffering > endurance (Jonah and I wrestling over creek at camp-he won because of endurance)

endurance > character (excellence versus obedience)

character > hope (the more we are refined by God’s purposes, the more hope we have in him)

Hope = no shame

explain this in Philippians 1:20

This system is “poured out” on to us by the Holy Spirit.

apostles couldn't figure this out, but it happened to them.

Once Jesus left, they began this process and its pretty cool how far the holy spirit took them.

Where are you at in the hope/suffering cycle?

What prayer do you need to ask God?

Do you need strength from the holy spirit?

Do you need a little more refining?

Because of faith in Jesus, we can have:

1. Peace with God

2. God’s Grace

3. Hope

4. Suffering with purpose

Exegete

Because we are justified, we have peace.

That statement speaks volumes.

We obtain peace because of his work.

We also obtain access to grace by faith.

Weust says that the therefore shows us that peace cannot be found in works (4:1-8), by law ordinances (4:9-12), or by law obedience (4:13-25), only through faith we have peace.

The first three never give peace to the soul.

He goes on to say that Paul says justification brings peace because it doesnt have as much to do with feelings as it does a change in God’s relation to a person.

Its not that we feel different, as much as our relationship to God has moved from under wrath to under God’s good grace.

There is no more fear, only peace.

Philippians 4:7 comes to mind with this peace.

The word peace also carries the definition of an absence of war.

There is no longer between us and God.

Wuest says that there is a difference between being at peace with God and having the peace of God in your heart.

One is a stance before God that comes with sanctification.

The other comes through the work of the holy spirit in sanctification.

Access means to bring and face

Things we gain access to:

Peace

access to grace

rejoicing in hope

rejoicing in suffering

Suffering/Hope Cycle

Suffering sets off a chain of events that produce multiple things:

suffering > endurance

endurance > character

character > hope

Hope = no shame

See this in Philippians 1:20

verses 6-8

Im not sure the title “only the weak will survive” is totally correct.

I guess its not wrong, just not complete.

Its kind of like the statement “its ok to not be ok.”

That is true, because of the grace of God.

But the reality is, is that it would be better to be ok, not not ok.

But so we find ourselves.

It would be better to be strong, perfect, and still in fellowship with God.

But that ship has sailed and that world is gone.

Now we are only either weak, or pridefully falsely strong.

Thats to say, that we are all weak.

Some just pretend to be strong.

Verses 9-11

We will probably not spend too much time on this passage.

We spent a good deal of time covering these very things in the last ch 3 sermon and the sermon in between 3 and 4. I feel pretty good about it.

I think pauls statement in 5:1 starts us out where we want to be.
