I. The Rich Man’s Question vs. 17-22
I. The Rich Man’s Question vs. 17-22
A. This man was young rich, and a ruler. He was the up and comer. His question wasn’t unusual, but he didn’t realize that it was off kilter. Salvation isn’t something you earn or do; it is a gift to receive.
B. Jesus turns the question on him, to try to get him to realize that Jesus is good because Jesus is God.
C. Jesus asked about the second half, about loving others. How you love others, shows if you love God.
D. The man loved money, more than Yahweh.
E. It’s not the outward appearance, but what’s in the heart. The man had money on the throne of his heart.
For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
II. Jesus’ Question vs. 23-27
II. Jesus’ Question vs. 23-27
A. Jesus is trying to teach them an important lesson. They might have been scared to answer because of what happened to them in the previous section.
B. Jesus uses an exaggeration to show that it is impossible for someone who is rich to be saved while trusting in your reaches.
C. Jesus isn’t saying that you have to be poor to be saved, but people thought that riches were a sign of God’s favor and it’s not. Hence their response. Again it’s all about your heart.
For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either.
If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content.
But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction.
For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy.
III. Peter’s Question vs. 28-31
III. Peter’s Question vs. 28-31
A. Peter wants to know what do I get since I have sacrificed so much? It is a valid question.
B. Jesus will repay one hundred fold. You might get a taste of it here, but you will get it in Heaven.
