Think of someone you love - Do they know?
How?
Do you say it?
Show it?
Specific behaviors (thing you know they like, don’t like?)
You have learned, by studying them.
You say you love__________, but how well do you know ____________, and how much time do you spend with ______________ getting to know ________________?
Three-legged stool
Prayer - Bible - Church
Bible Study and the Faithful
“There is no God” - it’s in the Bible
“Thou shall not kill” - so what about capital punishment?
Self-defense?
“The Lord helps those who help themselves” - it’s not in the Bible
“God won’t give you more than you can handle” - it’s not there
Cannot say you know the author if you do not know His Word.
How CAN you?
Salvation and sanctification - from His Word
How the Faithful Follower Treats Bible Study
Bible study: #1 factor related to faithfulness
Study - more than reading - study (might have to start with reading)
1) Grasp its Authority
Every word, every single word, verbally and plenary
God gave us His Word to reveal Himself to you (natural - creation; special - His Word)
2) A Matter of Obedience
But, it’s too difficult, confusing, hard to understand: (because we plop it open, read it, and expect to get it - what book would you ever read this way?)
The SAVED can understand, by the power of the Holy Spirit
POWER to the believer
Light to light the path, in Psalm 119 and John 8:12
Choose to stumble or walk in Light -
3) Life-changing
Get off the spiritual roller coaster
Disconnected?
Stumbling around spiritually?? See John 8:12
Better spouse, parent, friend, co-worker
Peace, Joy
What kind of Christian do you want to be? Be honest...
The faithful follower allows God’s Word to shape his/her life:
Prayer - 1 Thess 5:17
Attendance/involvement - Hebrews 10:25
Giving - 2 Cor. 8
Marriage - Eph. 4-5, others
Parenting - Eph. 6, Proverbs
Work ethic - 2 Thessalonians
Abortion - can you defend pro-life from God’s Word?
Family - can you defend Biblical marriage from God’s Word?
Sharing the Gospel - if you don’t study it, people who need to hear it will not
Connection to the LORD - He gave us His Word to connect us to Him
He wants you to know Him, to study His Word, and to put it into practice
Read + Study = Knowledge
Knowledge + Practice = Wisdom
He’s told you how to live, and your purpose in life.
There is nothing you are missing regarding direction and guidance!
Many who struggle do so because they are not wise - haven’t asked for wisdom and haven’t take time to acquire it - and it is all right HERE!
GOD IS COMMITTED TO PEOPLE WHO STRUGGLE WITH FAITH - He provides guidance, RIGHT HERE (Bible)
4) Can I really DO This?
My job is to teach, to lead, to show you how to learn, to teach you how to read and study your Bible
YOUR Bible study is your responsibility - lots of options how and when to get that done
Here: Sunday School, 10:00 service, Wed.
Bible study, Friday Bible study, Awana for the children (“Already Gone” reasons…)
Some practical advice:
PRAY first
Set aside time - you WILL make time for it if it is important
Don’t say you love the Lord if you don’t love His Word
And you can’t love His Word if you don’t study it
Love = selfless giving, giving of your time - priorities
Start with the books of the Bible (it’s too easy to use an app and type in a verse you saw somewhere)
Read from an actual paper-page Bible
Use a pencil - notes - active learning - Use highlighters - eye-catching when you read again
Some good resources
Context, history, grammar, audience, author, type of writing
(Today is not about Bible study methods, however)

Saying: “The Bible that is falling apart probably belongs to someone who isn’t”
Delight yourself in the Lord, make Him #1 priority, He’ll give you the desire to be in His Word
If you do not feel that desire, or do not feel that missing when you do not, you have not made the LORD your priority
And it’s affecting many other areas of your life
If you HAVE made Him the priority, then you already understand the encouragement and peace from being in His Word - BE ENCOURAGED!
Bible study is like prayer
NOBODY CAN STOP YOU - and you can do this anywhere, any time (pretty much)
Can’t read while you are driving?
True.
You can listen...
Like prayer, this is all on you…the level of your connection to Him is hugely dependent on your time in His Word
Do you know the Creator?
Do you know the Savior?
- Then study His Word
