SCRIPTURE READING
Genesis 2:18-25
PASTORAL CHALLENGE TO SHANE AND KITTY
Introduction
I’ve known Kitty a long time, and have enjoyed getting to know Shane.
Almost family (after Salem)
Jokes:
I married Miss Right.
Just didn’t know her first name was “Always.”
I haven’t spoken to my wife in 18 months.
I don’t like to interrupt her.
Kitty and Shane expressed the desire to emphasize two ideas this weekend: new beginnings and family unity.
There is a planned butterfly release a little later, and butterflies are a good picture of new beginnings.
A marriage is a new beginning.
It’s not a beginning like a birth, but more like a transformation.
Two people, without losing their individuality, become something else entirely when brought together.
It’s more like a metamorphosis.
Consider the butterfly.
Beginning as a caterpillar, it becomes something new through the process of metamorphosis.
Kitty and Shane, your marriage is a new beginning for both of you.
Without losing any of your individuality, you become something new when joined together.
Marriage is a new beginning that transforms.
Marriage transforms two people into one.
One flesh - “the two shall become one flesh.”
One will - not they you will always agree, because that individuality is still there.
But you will give and take, and “submit to one another in the Lord,” and Shane will learn to lead in a way that honors Jesus and respects Kitty’s individual will.
Marriage transforms two families into one.
(FAMILY UNITY)
Before government, before the church…before EVEN Clemson football, God created the family.
In the Garden of One, God made the woman out of the side of the man, and the two were one.
Your two families are now one.
How your two families get along will have a lot to do with your actions and reactions.
This kind of transformation requires you to change.
I want to encourage you with a few ideas on how to change well.
Be open to change.
JOKE: “Women marry because they believe the he will change on day.
Men marry because they believe she’ll never change.
Both are wrong.”
“You don’t marry one person; you marry three: the person you think they are, the person they [actually] are, and the person they are going to become…” (Richard Needham).
You are two imperfect people bringing all those imperfections together.Friction is certain; conflict is inevitable.
Be open to change; your own and your new spouse’s.
Be patient with one another.
“Be humble and gentle in every way.
Be patient with each other and lovingly accept each other” (Eph 4:2).
Forgive one another.
Two sinners brought together will sin against one another.
Be in the moment.
JOKE: First night in the bridal suite, and the husband is staring intently out the window into a beautiful, starry sky.
Wife: “Aren’t you coming to bed?” Husband: “Not on your life!
My father said this would be the best night of my life and I’m not going to miss it for anything!”
We all need to be transformed.
Caterpillar is “buried” in the chrysalis only to reemerge “reborn.”
Jesus said, “You must be born again.”
We are “buried with Christ” so that we might rise again to newness of life.
Kitty and Shane would be overjoyed if you were born again to a new beginning today.
DECLARATION OF INTENT
-Kitty and Shane face one another and hold hands.
Kitty, do you take Shane to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, to love, honor, and cherish, in sickness and health, forsaking all others, for as long as you both shall live?(
I do ),
