Romans 12:10

Introduction

Sometimes we talk about the need to have good relationships among God’s people but how vital is that.
But even if we see some importance, do we understand how to build them.
There is work here to do.

The Importance of Relationships

Consider the emphases on relationships in the epistles:
Romans 12:5
1 Cor. 1:10-11; 1 Cor. 13
2 Cor. 13:11
Gal. 5:13-14
Eph. 4:1-3
Phil. 2:2
Col. 3:12-15
1 Thess. 4:9
2 Thess. 3:15
1 Tim. 5:1-2
2 Tim. 2:23
Tit. 3:2
Philemon 1
Heb. 3:13; 10:24-26
Jas. 2:1-9
1 Pet. 1:22-2:2
2 Pet. 1:5-8
1 Jn. 2:9-11
2 Jn. 5-6
3 Jn. 10
Jude 16-19
The summation of the law and prophets is about our relationship with God and men (Matt. 22:37-39).
Twisted relationships lead to twisted biblical interpretation (Matt. 12:7).

Building Relationships

Affection is commanded (Rom. 12:10-11).
Even displays of affection are commanded (Rom. 16:16).
Practice hospitality with intention (Rom. 12:12-13).
Consider the word “practice” (Matt. 23:34; Acts 26:11).
Develop a loving determination for it (1 Pet. 4:9; Heb. 13:2).
Practice it from the outside in (Lk. 14:12-13).
Receive hospitality with intention (Lk. 7:36; 19:5).
We are working on seeing our brethren through the eyes of God (Rom. 14:7-10).

Conclusion

Relationships can develop naturally.
But that isn’t what God asks for. He says, pursue it.
We cannot disdain our brother here and hope to love him there.
But strong relationships makes it hard for wolves to find a place.
We are going to talk about doctrine tomorrow night but you can have lots of solid teaching on doctrine and bitterness and division will blind you to all of that in a moment.
