1 Peter 2:9

Introduction

Holiness is at the heart of God’s identity (Rev. 4:8; Isa. 6:3).
And we are to be a reflection of this identity (1 Pet. 1:16; Lev. 19:2).
Not only should we reflect it but it ought to be the core of our identity just as it is His.
Conforming vs. transforming has always been a great difficulty for God’s people (Rom. 12:2).

Holiness Separates

Immorality is the norm and always has been (Lev. 18:24, 27, 30).
Even behavior that identifies us with immorality is to be avoided (Lev. 19:27).
We are set apart to be God’s possession (Lev. 20:26; 1 Pet. 2:9).
It separates because it is based on different foundations (Matt. 6:24; Jas. 4:4).

Holiness is Beautiful

We do not often think of holiness in terms of beauty (Psa. 29:2; Isa. 6:3).
Holiness is related to wholeness (Matt. 5:48).
Consider the dictionary definition of whole
(1): free of wound or injury : UNHURT
(2): recovered from a wound or injury : RESTORED
(3): being healed
(4): free of defect or impairment : INTACT
(5): physically sound and healthy : free of disease or deformity
(6): mentally or emotionally sound
This can sound offensive (Lev. 21:17-21).
This does not deprive the disabled of kindness.
But disability is not the picture of holiness.
But don’t we want to live in a reality where there is no unholiness?
This is the way I want to live and present holiness (1 Cor. 7:32-34).

Holiness is in the Details

Grand truths lead to daily holiness (Eph. 1-3; 4:25-29; 5:22-6:9).
A life of holiness is built on small daily moments of holiness (Lk. 2:51).
Holiness can come into the most mundane (Matt. 10:42; Eph. 6:8; 1 Tim. 4:4-5).
Do not think that grand acts of holiness will come without the small ones (Lk. 16:10).
How are we doing in our current test of standing apart from the world?

Conclusion

The opportunities for distinction are growing.
The world is an ugly place, our holiness should be attractive to a world looking for a better way.
Not rooted in self-righteous piety, but in a love for our Holy God.
