The Greatest prayer ever recorded in scripture.
We call the prayer that we are most familiar with and have memorized the Lord’s prayer, but the prayer that He taught in Matthew 6 and Luke 11 is not actually a prayer that Jesus would pray.
Why?
It is because part of that prayer asks for forgiveness of our sins or trespasses, something that Jesus would never pray because He never sinned.
It is a model prayer for his disciples to pray, so instead of calling it the Lord’s prayer it should be called more appropriately the Disciple’s prayer.
Jesus prayed constantly - and if Jesus prayed constantly, we should also pray constantly — the Bible says pray without ceasing.
WE SHOULD BE A PRAYING CHURCH.
THIS PLACE CROSSWIND HOPE AND RESTORATION CENTER WILL BE A HOUSE OF PRAYER.
Not only did Jesus pray constantly, He prayed intensely:
While the gospels tell us that Jesus prayed constantly.
There are only at least 10 actual prayers said by Jesus that are recorded.
Today we are starting a short series on the greatest prayer ever recorded.
This is the real Lord’s prayer — also known as the High Priestly prayer of Jesus Christ in John 17.
Everyone should study, get a sense of the heart of Jesus...
ALL RISE FOR THE READING OF OUR MAIN SCRIPTURE TEXT THIS MORNING.
Lessons from the Lord’s prayer today:
God is glorified through the victory of the Son.
Christ’s victory is in His finished work on the cross.
God is glorified no matter what.
What manner did Jesus pray?
We close our eyes — in the Bible — kneeling, standing, sitting, arms raised,, prostrate to the ground..
we close our eyes — pray in private,, not to allow distractions — in reverence and complete attention.
Humility in bowing our heads.
Physical posture in prayer is not as important as the posture of the heart.
I pray even when I am driving the car — I can’t close my eyes.
When we are deep in worship to the Lord..
Jesus lifted up His eyes --- He did the same in John 11 when He raised Lazarus..
The first requirement of effective power is our relationship to God.. We can call Him Father.
The hour has come — this is significant.
Many times in the book the Lord talked about the “hour”.. My hour has not come, His hour has not come,..
Now Jesus said the hour has come, and He said “glorify your son that the Son may glorify you.”
Seems to be a selfish prayer.. first it appears Jesus is praying for His glory.. secondly it appears that He demands He be glorified first so that He may glorify the Father.
Conditional?
Quid pro quo?
This is a question asked from the sinful nature.
Jesus never sinned.
Jesus’ heart is always perfectly right.. Praying to be glorified is a prayer that only Jesus Christ can pray and rightfully so!
After all..
But there is another important aspect to this prayer.. let us go back to the hour.. the hour has come — what is this hour?
The key is in what Jesus said in
The hour is … why He came to the world in the first place, to be led to the cross to die for the sins of the world.
His number one accomplishment.. Jesus won the victory on the cross.
Lesson 1: God is glorified through the victory of the Son.
Authority over all flesh — after Jesus’ ultimate victory on the cross,, He rose from the dead and He declared.. verses here (Matthew 28, Revelation 1)
To give eternal life — Jesus’ being glorified is the most unselfish request of all because His victory brought eternal life..
I love this, the only verse I know where Jesus refers to His Name and His title — in the Third Person.
JESUS CHRIST.
He is not elevating Himself, He is WHO He is.
Lesson 2: Jesus’ Victory is Through His Finished Work.
The obedience of Jesus.
People pray without obedience...
must be at the center of God’s will.. one thing we can learn from Jesus.
GOD’s WILL BE DONE
In another prayer He prayed in the garden of Gethsemane:
Not my will but thine be done.
Ultimate submission.
Lesson 3: God is glorified no Matter what.
Why did Jesus pray for God to be glorified in the first place???
God’s glory in reference to the world — is through the finished work of Jesus.
But God does not need the world, He does need us..
GOD BY NATURE IS GLORIOUS!
We will have a better appreciation of God’s love and the work of Jesus Christ on our behalf when we meditate this truth.
GOD DID NOT NEED US.
BUT HE CHOSE TO COME AND SAVE US ANYWAY, SIMPLY BECAUSE WE NEED HIM.
Praise the Lord at this time!!
The good news does not stop there — Jesus continues to intercede for us in glory, Hallelujah!
John 17 is a sample of Jesus’ intercessory work for us in heaven.
He intercedes for us and for our ministry and witness as a church.
We are the continuing work of Jesus Christ!
