o In who the promises are given to…. (Gentiles also)
o In the matter of the Who shall be saved
o In HOW He displays His power & glory
- The Jews are still the elect in that they are chosen to be examples
o Gentiles do not replace them
BUT make NO MISTAKE Salvation has always been universally for ALL who chose Jesus Christ!
OUR TEXT
I. V1-2 - A Heart for the Lost
a. V1 - Paul knew that his Jewish brethren where trying to secure their Salvation in serving the Law.
b. Notice the Words “might be saved”
i. They have to make a choice
c. V2 – “they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. “
i. Zeal – Passionate devotion in the pursuit of anything / An eagerness oof desire to accomplish or obtain some object
ii. Zeal of God – Give us the direction
- Orthodox Judaism puts many Christians to shame with its Zeal
Þ It’s a sad FACT that there are thousands of zealous people who are lost.
o Mormons – Leave their homes to serve a false religion
o There are few more dedicated that a Bahai missionary
o How about a committed MARXISTS!
d. V2 – “but not according to knowledge.”
i. This “LACK of knowledge” was self-inflicted
1. We will look at this more in a few mins.
Þ There are many religious people today are tare making the same mistake
o Thinking that their good works and religious deeds will save them
§ When actually “like the Jew serving the Law” are keeping them from getting saved!
- ((Quote)) – “Many may say, “They are sincere people”
o “I just can’t believe such a good, honest, sincere person will be lost!”
§ Sincerity NEVER REPLACES TRUTH
II. V3-4 – Understanding God’s Righteousness
a. God NEVER intended for the Jews to be saved by serving the Law!
i. And their failure to live up to the laws demands what to direct them to the grace of God in Christ
Galatians 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
b. V4 – “For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.
i. Christ is the end
1. For the Jew – Christ offers true righteousness that is not found in self-righteousness
2. For us – Christ offers righteousness that cannot be found in services to any religion also!
- (Quote) – “It is so easy for a zealous person to be lost if one thinks religion exists as a ladder to elevate oneself to righteousness and acceptance before God.”
- But instead of turning to God in repentance the Jew’s “sought to establish their own righteousness”
o Many today are that!
Þ Many today will not listen and admit there need for Jesus Christ
o Their pride will keep them from getting saved
o Their pride will keep them from getting a life right
Þ Many would rather go down flames
o Than to admit that they are wrong and come to the Saviour.
o Clinging to a self-righteous attitude!
Þ Don’t misunderstand
o A true Christian should be zealous in service for God
§ Zealous in church service
§ Zealous in teaching a class
§ Zealous in soul-winning
o But NEVER in place of coming to the Lord for our Salvation by faith!
III. V5-13 - Man’s Responsibility / Contrast Two Righteousness
a. 1st – The righteousness that has its origin in the law
i. V5 – Lev 18:5 – Moses – If a person is able to perform all that the law requires, it will lead to life
Galatians 3:12 And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.
ii. Problem – No one is able to live up to the requirements of the law
1. It was never meant to merit God’s favor
b. 2nd - The righteousness that is based on faith is different
i. V6-7 - Faith – God’s way of salvation was not a complicated difficult way of righteousness
ii. They did NOT have to go to heaven to find Christ or into the world of the dead!
Þ There are those that would complicate a “simple Salvation that is by faith” to try to earn merit with the Lord through self-merit
o Walk of Emmaus / pilgrimages / spiritualism into a dark world of evil and try to return etc.
Galatians 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
c. V6-7 – Teaching us that Salvation is always accessible and available through faith in Jesus Christ!
i. SO Simple that a Child can understand it!
d. V8 – Paul quoting Old Testament Scripture
i. Isaiah 28:16 – It’s always been about faith.
e. V9-10; V13 – ((READ)) - Key Words
i. Confess, believe + V13 – Call upon the name of the Lord.
Again Old Testament Quotes of Scripture – (They should have known)
Isaiah 28:16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
Joel 2:32 And it shall come to pass, thatwhosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.
- Thus, pointing the way of Salvation
o So easy a child can understand
- V12 - Universal offer of Salvation
o “For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.”
Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
- Confess – and outward confession that stems from a inward conviction
o Must believe in the resurrected Christ
o Must believe and confess the need (Sinner in need of Salvation)
Þ Pride and stubbornness was keeping the Jews from getting saved.
§ How about you today?
o Could pride and stubbornness keeping you away from the Saviour today – Admitting your in NEED!
§ Salvation – Service – Removing sin
