I want to take this time to welcome all of our first guest. (In person or online)
Today we continue our series called I AM
These I am statement point to the Lordship and Deity of Christ:
I am The Bread of Life informs us that he that satisfies your soul
I am The Light of the World that brings light to this dark world and empowers us to reflect His light
I am The Gate that lead you out of sin into the family of God.
Today want to exam his statement, “I am the Good Shepherd”
Read text
John 10:11–21 CSB
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand, since he is not the shepherd and doesn’t own the sheep, leaves them and runs away when he sees a wolf coming. The wolf then snatches and scatters them. This happens because he is a hired hand and doesn’t care about the sheep. “I am the good shepherd. I know my own, and my own know me, just as the Father knows me, and I know the Father. I lay down my life for the sheep. But I have other sheep that are not from this sheep pen; I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. Then there will be one flock, one shepherd. This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life so that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have the right to lay it down, and I have the right to take it up again. I have received this command from my Father.” Again the Jews were divided because of these words. Many of them were saying, “He has a demon and he’s crazy. Why do you listen to him?” Others were saying, “These aren’t the words of someone who is demon-possessed. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”
Prayer: Lord, John 3:30 “He must increase, but I must decrease.”” In our live my your LOVE increase, may we care for the things you care for and we need you to lead us like our shepherd. (you preach…)
When we are trying to get to know people we often ask the question, what do you do?
Most titles tell you what people do:
I am an Teacher
I am an Engineer
I am a Pastor
I am a musician
The I am statement of Jesus tell us more about who He is, but they also informs about what he has done.
In the beginning our time today I talk about the main purpose of these 7 I am statements. {They point to the Lordship and Deity of Christ}
I am is title of Deity (When the voice that spoke to Moses while in the presents of the burning bush declare I am sent you, it points to voice of God)
When Jesus declares I AM he is claiming DEITY
the GOOD Mark 10:17-18 “As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before him, and asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked him. “No one is good except God alone.”
Now Jesus after saying no one is good but God. Is proclaiming himself to be Good. Why? Because he is God.
But also wanted us to know what he did for His sheep.
Write this down a the first point:
The Good Shepherd dies for His sheep. (vv11-13)
John 10:11–13 (CSB)
I am the good shepherd.
Hired hand (Money, Getting paid) (Don’t just work for pay but love the work.)[When danger comes the hired hand gets the stepping]
John–Acts (10:11–18. Jesus Lays down His Life for the Sheep)
leaving the sheep for the wolf to ravage. The hired hand cares for himself more than for the sheep
The Good Shepherd is different....He love the sheep (they belong to him), They care for the sheep (Because he knows the sheep)
1 Samuel 17:34–36 CSB
David answered Saul, “Your servant has been tending his father’s sheep. Whenever a lion or a bear came and carried off a lamb from the flock, I went after it, struck it down, and rescued the lamb from its mouth. If it reared up against me, I would grab it by its fur, strike it down, and kill it. Your servant has killed lions and bears; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living God.”
Too offend we think we are like David. (rocks, sling, brave) punk
David points to true and better shepherd, Jesus who is the Good Shepherd.
Jesus is the true and better shepherd that laid down his life for his sheep.
Jot this down a the second point:
The Good Shepherd knows His sheep (vv14-15)
John 10:14–15 (CSB)
“I am the good shepherd. I know my own, and my own know me, just as the Father knows me, and I know the Father. I lay down my life for the sheep.
John–Acts (10:11–18. Jesus Lays down His Life for the Sheep)
Having spoken of how the good shepherd sacrifices himself for the sheep, Jesus speaks of the bond between the sheep and the shepherd in verses 14–15. Jesus characterizes the relationship between himself and his sheep in the most intimate way.
The word know in the text come from the word ginosko (known intimately) (more intimate that a husband and wife)
The comparison is God the father and God the son.
John 10:3 (CSB)
The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
God knows your name because the shepherd is your creator
Psalm 139:13 CSB
For it was you who created my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
Not only does he know his sheep but his sheep knows Him.
May of 2004 (Grad, Home and Married)
Some used my name to take from me and my family.
“Thief comes to use and steal your name, Jesus knows your name”
This ginosko relationship leads to a union, communion and intimacy
General needs
Special needs: (High places, dark places…)
-Emotional Needs, Mental Needs, and Physical Needs
(Jesus to father) John 17:3 “This is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and the one you have sent—Jesus Christ.”
This union lead to eternal life. Believing in Jesus leads us into the Kingdom family and members of this family leads to eternal salvation.
Take note of the third point:
The Good Shepherd brings other sheep into the flock (v16)
John–Acts (10:11–18. Jesus Lays down His Life for the Sheep)
Jesus asserts in verse 16 that he has other sheep that are not of this fold, likely a reference to the Gentiles he will call to himself in addition to the Jews he drew to himself during his earthly ministry.
Jesus is concern not concern about the Jewish flock (Through the Jewish flock all nations will be saved.
There will be one flock under him, and one shepherd, sharing a unity that goes beyond racial distinction, cultural background, or societal preference.
Here is the last point:
The Good Shepherd takes up His life again (vv17-21)
-Volunteer his death (Do you believe I can)
-Substitutionary Atonement
-Hope for Resurrection
The gospel (Jesus came, live, lay down his life and defeated)
How do you view Jesus? (vv19-21) (Read)
-He is too crazy or not worthy to follow
-He is a shepherd worthy to be followed
