Exodus 15 is a song! How amazing is it that God would only not allow people to worship him but also preserve truth about himself in music!
This is actually the first song observed in scripture!
It’s a song of deliverance! GOD HAS WORKED! GOD HAS DELIVERED!
Their response to salvation was song!
Maybe you’re here today and you aren’t singing like you should? Maybe you don’t have a song? Maybe you’ve forgotten why you sing?
Let’s examine this divine song of delivered people
Exodus 15:1-22
Their Motive for song (15:1)
Their Motive for song (15:1)
God has delivered them! God has saved them!
Remember where they were when we are first introduced in Exodus 2:23 “And it came to pass in process of time, that the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage.”
In bondage
Egypt- The place they went to for a break became a place of bondage. Maybe that’s you(that person, that app, that addiction, that response...that thing you went to for comfort that is now a trap)
Rigorous work that availed nothing for them
They had taskmasters that made them work and labour.
Maybe there is that issue in your life that has just had you working and stressing but never yielded anything?
Forced to kill their children
Surrounded by loss
Maybe that was you?
Suffering the wages of sin?
They just sighed
They were just broken. No tears left. No fight they put up would work. Just stuck.
That was us and maybe you.
Sin enslaves and ultimately leads to death and brokenness.
He took their sigh and turned it into song!
John 8:34 “Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.”
In the midst of all that pain and brokenness they cried out and God was listening!
God heard! God raised a deliverer!
Exodus 3:8
God became their strength and salvation
Exodus 15:2-3 “The Lord is my strength and song, And he is become my salvation: He is my God, and I will prepare him an habitation; My father’s God, and I will exalt him. The Lord is a man of war: the Lord is his name.”
He does miracles and liberates them!
He is still in the liberation business!
John 8:36 “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”
Galatians 5:1 “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”
He wants to free you if you’re not!
God guided them to freedom
He had not only emanpacated them but also defeated their foes entirely!
He guides them through the Red Sea!
Through a trial!
He does a great work and they see it!
Exodus 14:31 “And Israel saw that great work which the Lord did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the Lord, and believed the Lord, and his servant Moses.”
They see all of this occur and it gives them reason to sing and praise! Salvation leads to song!
Has God not done miracles in your life?
Delivered you?
Guided you?
SING he's done GREAT THINGS!
Isaiah 35:10 “And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, And come to Zion with songs And everlasting joy upon their heads: They shall obtain joy and gladness, And sorrow and sighing shall flee away.”
The Message of the song
The Message of the song
All people we’re going to hear about how God worked
Exodus 15:14-19 “The people shall hear, and be afraid: Sorrow shall take hold on the inhabitants of Palestina. Then the dukes of Edom shall be amazed; The mighty men of Moab, trembling shall take hold upon them; All the inhabitants of Canaan shall melt away. Fear and dread shall fall upon them; By the greatness of thine arm they shall be as still as a stone; Till thy people pass over, O Lord, Till the people pass over, which thou hast purchased. Thou shalt bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of thine inheritance, In the place, O Lord, which thou hast made for thee to dwell in, In the Sanctuary, O Lord, which thy hands have established. The Lord shall reign for ever and ever. For the horse of Pharaoh went in with his chariots and with his horsemen into the sea, and the Lord brought again the waters of the sea upon them; but the children of Israel went on dry land in the midst of the sea.”
The world would hear their song of praise!
Let the world hear us worship!
People came to God after hearing about his works!
Do we sing them out?
God was going to keep them and guide them! (Exodus 15:17 “Thou shalt bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of thine inheritance, In the place, O Lord, which thou hast made for thee to dwell in, In the Sanctuary, O Lord, which thy hands have established.” )
They sang about his promises and plans!
They sang about how GREAT GOD WAS!
Strength,salvation,power,size,might,
Worship the Lord because he is great!
Romans 15:11 “And again, Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles; and laud him, all ye people.”
The Might of the song!
The Might of the song!
And the song ends on a note of glory, looking ahead to His eternal reign
This song had eternal “replay value”
You never know how your song will minister!
Revelation 15:3 “And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints.”
If you’re here: How’s your song? God has given us many reasons to sing! Has he done miracles for you? Let’s sing out!
