Ask Anything with Dr Bowman Questions What stood out to you?
Words of the week
1 Peter 3:13–17 ESV
13 Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? 14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, 15 but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, 16 having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. 17 For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God’s will, than for doing evil.
John 20:24–31 ESV
24 Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.” 26 Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” 28 Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” 30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
Ask Anything with Dr Bowman Questions What stood out to you?
· How can you tell if you are truly saved? Rom 10:9-10
Romans 10:9–10 ESV
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
Romans 6:1–3 ESV
1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?
John 13:34–35 ESV
34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
James
Why did God have Jesus die for our sins and not someone else?
Romans 5:8 ESV
8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Isaiah 59:16 ESV
16 He saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no one to intercede; then his own arm brought him salvation, and his righteousness upheld him.
2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV
21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Why is salvation not work based?
Romans 3:19–20 ESV
19 Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.
Is believing a work?
· What’s the best way to share the gospel with a friend?
Theology & Bible
· Why is it that God hardens the hearts of some men and not others?
· If a baby dies at birth, do they go to heaven? - Age of accountability -
· When is a soul created and when we die do we have a body in heaven?
Philippians 3:20–21 ESV
20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.
Luke 24:39 ESV
39 See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.”
· How old is the world according to Christianity?
· What did Matthew mean in Matthew 24:37? - “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. 37 For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. (Mt 24:36–37)
· If all the believers are raptured how do the two witnesses show up on the scene in Revelation 11:3 - And I will grant authority to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth.” (Rev 11:3). (This obviously comes from a Dispensational background which matches with our church’s doctrinal statement, Feel free to reroute this one to me if need be.)
LGTBQ+
· Is the verse from Leviticus mistranslated about “man shall not lie with another man”? I am assuming they mean (Lev 18:22). 22 You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.
· How do we approach gender/pronoun conversations with unbelievers?
Romans 12:16–18 ESV
16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. 17 Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.
Christians believe that rooted deep in the way that God set up the world that biblically (and scientifically proven) that human beings are purposefully created as one or the other gender for our good while also showing sympathy and compassion toward those who struggle with this reality personally. Medically intersex vs gender disphoria.
· What do you do if you are called homophobic?
Difference between hating them and telling them that what they are doing is not right.
Those in distress through no fault of their own Mark 1:40-42
Mark 1:40–42 ESV
40 And a leper came to him, imploring him, and kneeling said to him, “If you will, you can make me clean.” 41 Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.” 42 And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean.
Those who know they are in sin - offer forgiveness - Luke 15
Those who proudly deny their sin: leave in blindness - John 9:40-41
John 9:40–41 ESV
40 Some of the Pharisees near him heard these things, and said to him, “Are we also blind?” 41 Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no guilt; but now that you say, ‘We see,’ your guilt remains.
Those who claim authority but lead others into sin or harm: Strongly condemn Matt 23
Apologetics & Culture
· How should we deal with hatred towards Christians?
· What happens to the other sects of Christianity? (Presumably at final judgment)
Different denominations vs sects of Christianity
Believers and unbelievers in every church
Romans 2:13 ESV
13 For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified.
Romans 6:23 ESV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
· What do you think of the (this student said cesspool) that is Twitter? Feel free to guide them in responding to social media in general.
· What is the biblical way to respond to the current administration (do we shut up and do as we are told or do you fight against it)?
Romans 13:1–7 ESV
1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, 4 for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God’s wrath but also for the sake of conscience. 6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. 7 Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.
Matthew 22:21 ESV
21 They said, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
Acts 5:29 ESV
29 But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.
1 Thessalonians 4:11–12 ESV
11 and to aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you, 12 so that you may walk properly before outsiders and be dependent on no one.
