Roles
Introduction
Before we go into the final lesson in our series on the Holy Spirit....let me ask you a few questions to reflect on.
Have you ever felt like you aren’t good enough?
Have you ever felt like you are a waste of space and have nothing to offer?
Have you every felt like life just gets to complicated, confusing and hard, and that you just aren’t strong enough to navigate life in those circumstances?
The reality is, we probably have all felt this way at times in our lives, and maybe even all three at once.
These can be powerful emotions, and how we engage with those feelings can have a huge impact on our lives
If I go through life believing that I’m a bad person, a waste of space, and I’m too weak to get through it all…where does that lead me?
It sounds like a life of despair, depression, insecurity, lonliness, self-loathing, self-isolation, shame, hopelessness, fear
Does any of that sound familiar?
I ask these questions, because today we are closing our series on the Holy Spirit by talking about WHAT the Holy Spirit does.
I want to highlight three things, and this is not an exhaustive list, but they are three things that address the questions and emotions we opened up with.
Changes You (Don’t feel like you’re good enough?)
Change in character
The work of the Holy Spirit in a Christian’s life is an on-going process of becoming holy
I’m not who I should be yet, but I’m not who I was 2 years ago!
Galatians 5:16-21
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
Against such things there is no law” (Galatians 5:22-23).
He produces God’s love in human hearts.
Equipping You (Don’t feel like you have anything to offer?)
He gives believers the power to be a part of the most important job on earth
“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8).
Greater than being a pro athlete, president, instagram influencer, Doctor
Those are all good things, but the Holy Spirit wants to make you a part of the most important work in the world.
He gives people the skills and abilities they need to share God’s love; these are sometimes called “spiritual gifts.”
“God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to His will” (Hebrews 2:4).
Sustains You (Don’t feel like you are strong enough to make it?)
The Holy Spirit Helps in a Christian’s Weakness and Intercedes for Them
We all have times we feel weak and don’t know what to do.
The Holy Spirit helps us line up with God’s will during those times by interceding for us.
“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness.
We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.
And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God” (Romans 8:26-27).
The Holy Spirit Is a Seal in the Lives of Believers
“You also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation.
When you believed, you were marked in Him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession — to the praise of His glory” (Ephesians 1:13-14).
In the ancient world, a seal was a “legal signature” attesting ownership and validating what was sealed.
The Holy Spirit is our mark of adoption as God’s children.
Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to his followers so that they could be confident in their salvation.
What more could we ask for?
He has given us everything we need!
Salvation
The Holy Spirit has many different roles.
But the first thing to understand is that the Holy Spirit is given to people who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
ABC’s of salvation
Prayer (pray this in your heart, as I pray it out loud)Dear Lord Jesus I believe you're the son of God.
I believe that on the cross you took my sin, my shame, and my guilt, and you died for it.
You faced hell for me so I wouldn't have to go.
You rose from the dead to give me a place in heaven, a purpose on earth, and a relationship with your father.
Today Lord Jesus I turn from my sin to be born again.
God is my father, Jesus is my savior, the Holy Spirit is my helper, and heaven is my home.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
