Today’s reading is not our text for the passage but one that has gripped my heart as I consider what Jesus is doing in today’s story
Isaiah 61:1–3 (KJV 1900)
1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; Because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; He hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to them that are bound; 2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all that mourn; 3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, To give unto them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they might be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.

Introduction
Been looking forward to simply reading this text to you today.
Parable of the Brats Luke 7:32 “32 They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept.”
We will see the contract between those the broken and the pharisees Luke 7:29-30 “29 And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.
30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.”
Here we see the contrast of these 2 groups.
Luke 7:36–50 (KJV 1900)
36 And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him.
And he went into the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to meat.
37 And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster box of ointment, 38 And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.
39 Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.
40 And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee.
And he saith, Master, say on.
41 There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.
42 And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both.
Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?
43 Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most.
And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.
44 And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman?
I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.
45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.
46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.
47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.
48 And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.
49 And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also?
50 And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.
Contrasting Characters
Spend more time speaking of this women because she is represents a love that we have seen less often then the dead, religion of the pharisee

Simon the Pharisee

Simon the Pharisee is different than Simon the Leper in Matthew 26, Mark 14, John 12
Invitation to his home but not his heart
Notice Jesus is a friend of sinners but he is also willing to go home into the home of the Pharisee.
Why?
We all are sinners.
We all are in need of forgiveness.
Dinner would have been in the courtyard
Simon was not courteous
No water for the feet
No welcome with a kiss
No oil offered for his head
Simon was very skeptical
Behold a woman in this city which was a sinner
Luke 7:37–38 (KJV 1900)
37 And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster box of ointment, 38 And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.
Wasn’t able to stay on the sideline
The rebuke in verse 39 is not because the woman has come to the meal, but because she did not stay on the sidelines.
Appears she had already met or knew of Jesus.
Jesus had just preached to the poor.
Said nothing was very much spoken about
The woman says nothing in this narrative, but her actions produce a wide range of discussion
forgiveness possesses transforming power.
She gave of her own resources

1 And it came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and village, preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: and the twelve were with him, 2 And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils, 3 And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance.
This is unique to Luke
Jesus ministers, he draws followers who come from a wide variety of backgrounds
Story of 3 women of diverse backgrounds
Mary Magdalene serves after having seven demons exorcised by Jesus.
Joanna, as the wife of Herod’s steward Cuza, gives evidence that Jesus’ message has reached even into the palace.
Susanna seems to be connected to that name.
Then the women in this story.
Their ministry comes at two levels: personal involvement and the contribution of resources.
Both levels of involvement are important to effective ministry.

11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
Though God may use my work on the supply line.
You are the front line.

7 But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
One so willing to serve and another so unwilling.
Both is a response to who they believe Jesus is.
Jesus: The Hero of every story worth telling
when Jesus tells a story in which there are two main characters, Jesus is always the main point,
That is the hard question this text asks.
Do we see sinners for who they have been or for what God can make of them?
He declared that past pardon would now yield future peace.

50 And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.
This is how we overcome the shame
