Galatians 5:22-23
The area of Indio, California is known for its date trees.
Each year the city holds an annual date festival where they sell their famous date shakes.
One quality of date trees is that they live extraordinarily long lives.
In fact they don’t even bear fruit for the first four years, and their most productive years of fruit bearing begins around age eighty.
These mature date palms produce about one hundred pounds of fruit annually.
Their productivity is a testimony to their longsuffering.
In this passage, Paul mentions the fruit of the Spirit, longsuffering.
The Greek word is made up of 2 words: makro, and thumos
Or, slow and wrath.
Or in other words “slow to wrath”
Thankfully, longsuffering is an attribute of God….
One preacher defined longsuffering as, “an enduring temperament that expresses itself in patience with the shortcomings of others.”
An enduring (continuing without perishing) temperament (a person’s makeup or personality) that expresses itself in patience (calm in temper) with the shortcomings of others.
We all have expectations of what other people should be doing and how they should be acting.
Too often we feel let down by people.
Regardless of whether they were wrong in falling short
Or whether our expectations were unrealistic, God’s intention is for us to respond with the fruit of the Spirit—longsuffering.
He wants us to respond with an enduring temperament expressed by patience with the shortcomings or faults of others.
It is an attribute He commands in His children.
We live in a day of quick retribution.
Not enough people are practicing the patience of the Bible.
Most of us are not born with a lot of patience.
I wish we all could be a little more like the boy standing at the end of the escalator.
The sales lady asked, “Son are you lost?” “No ma’am, I’m waiting for my chewing gum to come back.”
The fruit of longsuffering is not developed with a spirit of self – determination
It is developed by the Holy Spirit.
What does longsuffering do?

The Perseverance of Longsuffering
Longsuffering enables us to persevere on a difficult day.
Whether the prophets, or the apostle Paul, or some mature Spirit led Christian…
We respect those who exhibit longsuffering in their lives.
Why are all Christians able to persevere when others struggle, become faint and quit?
There are two primary reasons:
A. We Persevere Because of God’s Purpose
1.
To correct us
2. To challenge us
I find that I listen to the scriptures more attentively during times of trial.
Do we respond the way that the Psalmist does?
When our car is scratched…
When we feel sick…
No, it isn’t natural to react that way, but God brings these things to challenge us.
3. To use us
When Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers, he had no idea how God would one day use him.
Joseph’s longsuffering through trials and testing allowed him to be used by God in a great way.
B. We Persevere Because of God’s Priority
Have you ever seen the bumper sticker, “Be patient, God’s not finished with me yet!”
Or heard the song, “He’s still working on me…”
God’s priority is to conform us into the image of his Son.
This predestination is not in regards to justification; it is regards to our sanctification.
Quote- “In adversity, we want God to do a removing job, when He wants to do an improving job.”
Our willingness to wait on the Lord is an expression of our faith….

The Influence of Longsuffering
Chrysostom, one of the early church fathers of the 2nd century church said, “Longsuffering is the grace of the man who could revenge himself and does not”
When we exercise longsuffering, we will have godly influence with people that are in our lives.
A. With Our Family
The Holy Spirit enables us to be patient with our family.
Ill - Who can ever forget Winston Churchill's immortal words: "We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, and we shall fight in the hills."
It sounds exactly like our family vacation.
But the truth is, sometimes we seem to have the least amount of patience with those closest to us.
Instead of acting, we react.
Sometimes a wayward child gives us distress, but displaying the longsuffering of God could be what draws them back to Christ.
The Holy Spirit can enable us to be patient with our family.
Sometimes our marriages cannot be easy.
They say opposites attract, however opposites do cause friction.
Author and pastor Greg Laurie “A good marriage is not the result of finding the right person; it is a result of being the right person.”
We need wisdom to see a problem from our spouse’s point of view.
Sock preferences –how to put socks in the laundry, how to wash them, how to fold them…etc.
Shopping with your wife it’s a necessary evil – But men shop differently than women…get in, get it, get out!
It doesn’t matter…are we loving and joyfully expressing longsuffering to our mate?
I promised to treat her royally for the remainder of the day.
I took her to lunch at Burger King and Dairy Queen for dessert.
B. With Others around Us
Like most fruits of the Spirit, patience is the product of love.
If we love people without expectation of return, we experience rejoicing in all circumstances.
That joy leads to a peaceful freedom from worry in mind, body and spirit.
This leads a person to respond with a temperament of patience with the shortcomings of others.
Charity suffers with the weaknesses, ignorance and error of others.
It waits for God to accomplish his divine purposes.

Man on a New York Subway with 4 screaming children
2. Co-workers
3. Friends
Over the years I have seen and experienced Christians saying false accusations
But we need to be like Christ…

III.
The Deliverance of Longsuffering
A. The Deliverance of Salvation
God’s desire is for our repentance
Because of His Longsuffering we can be saved and so can others.
B. The Deliverance of the Second Coming
Once I read of parents who decided to let their three-year-old son record the message for their home answering machine.
The rehearsals went smoothly: "Mommy and Daddy can't come to the phone right now.
If you'll leave your name, phone number, and a brief message, they'll get back to you as soon as possible."
Then came the test.
