The Judahites are experiencing a severe period of desolation and despair. While mourning, Joel prophesies about the destruction from the Almighty and how droughts and desiccation will follow after it. Joel meditates for the people and calls upon God. Every living thing: human, livestock, and vegetation are dry and barren. Yet, the church lives in a different predicament. We, too, are dealing with spiritual drought, and we must pant for the living God who can restore our soul and bring about joy once again.
