Acts 2:1-13 • Pentecost, The Holy Spirit

I. The Arrival - Acts 2:1-3

v. 1 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place.

v. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.

v. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.

v. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

II. The Manifestation - Acts 2:5-11

1. The believers spoke in other understandable languages.

5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language.

v. 6 ...each one was hearing them speak in his own language.

v. 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?

v. 3-4 We think they are still inside.

v. 5ff They are outside.

III. The Reaction - Acts 2:6-13

1. Created Amazement!

bewildered, amazed, perplexed

v. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken.

v. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans?

v. 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”

2. It made people wonder what was happening.

3. Made them ask questions.

v. 7 “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans?”

v. 8 “Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?”

v. 12 “What does this mean?”

v. 13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”

III. The Purpose of Tongues - Acts 2:11-12

1. To declare the wonders of God!

v. 11 “… we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!”

2. People from all over the known world heard about what God was doing in their mother tongues.

4. The people took the Gospel back with them when they went back home.

IV. Application for Our Church - Acts 2:1-13

1. The church started as an international, multi-ethnic congregation.

2. People from around the world heard the Wonders of God.

3. That is the dream for our church!

4. People will be equipped to effectively spread the Gospel wherever they go.
