OOOOOOOO Acts 2:1–4 (HCSB) Pentecost 2 When the day of Pentecost had arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like that of a violent rushing wind came from heaven, and it filled the whole house where they were staying. 3 And tongues, like flames of fire that were divided, appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 Then they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different languages, as the Spirit gave them ability for speech.
...... day of Pentecost - Just as Jesus was resurrected during the Passover, the second major event in Jewish lives was the day of Pentecost. The Jewish feast of Pentecost (Shavuot) was primarily a thanksgiving for the firstfruits of the wheat harvest, but it was later associated with a remembrance of the Law given by God to Moses on Mount Sinai.
Spirit’s Arrival There was a manifestation of God’s power that came upon the whole building. There was a sudden, unusual sound of a violent rushing wind which wasn’t outside of the house but filled the inside of the house. Some of these apostles were fishermen, they were used to the outdoors , in fact there lives could depend upon understanding winds when they were in the small fishing boats in the Sea of Galilee. This sea is subject to the onset of high winds coming about suddenly down from the mountains. This was an unusual, strong, sound of a heavy wind. Accompanying the sound came tongues of shimmering, moving vapor??- it looked like flames that then divided and appeared to rest on each of them.
Recall with the baptism of Jesus by John, there appeared something almost dove like which descended and came to rest on Jesus. A spiritual pretense sent to a specific person.A physical manifestation of God’s action. And as the Spirit gave them the ability they began to speak in different languages. So that visitors from around the world in Jerusalem could understand their native tongue.
This is not the same as the “prayer or spiritual language or utterance, but these are specific languages.. V6 When this sound occurred, a crowd came together and was confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language.
Word for Spirit The root word of spirit in Greek is “pneuma”. It means to breathe as well as life itself or spirit. Just as the Hebrew word “ruach” has the same meaning. In the beginning Genesis 2:7 (ESV)7 then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath [ruach]of life, and the man became a living creature.
Now the Spirit arrives with not just the sound of a breath, be He enters into the house with the sound of violent, rushing wind. Taken over the members and giving them languages and mandating their use. They begin to proclaim the magnificent acts of God.
the word for spirit can refer to a godly spirit [angels], human spirit, demonic spirit [Heb 4:33] , Holy Spirit [Trinity, supernatural agent].
1 Corinthians 15:44–46 (HCSB) 44 sown a natural body, raised a spiritual body.If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. 45 So it is written: The first man Adam became a living being; the last Adam became a life-giving Spirit. 46 However, the spiritual is not first, but the natural, then the spiritual.
OOOOOOOO Acts 2:5–13 (HCSB)
5 There were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 When this sound occurred, a crowd came together and was confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7 And they were astounded and amazed, saying, “Look, aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 How is it that each of us can hear in our own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes, Elamites; those who live in Mesopotamia, in Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking the magnificent acts of God in our own languages.” 12 They were all astounded and perplexed, saying to one another, “What could this be?” 13 But some sneered and said, “They’re full of new wine!”
The Universal Language The crowd was comprised of people [Jews and proselytes ] from the coast of Africa all the way around the Mediterranean to Rome, Arabia, Libya to Rome. The message of what God has done and is doing is proclaimed by those in the upper room. A small group is reaching out with the Gospel to the entire world [known at that time]. The skeptics denied what their own eyes and ears were seeing and hearing. The truth is often denied.
OOOOOOOO 2:14 But Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed to them: “Men of Judah and all you residents of Jerusalem, let me explain this to you and pay attention to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it’s only nine in the morning. 16 On the contrary, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel [2:28]: 17 And it will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out My Spirit on all humanity; then your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. 18 I will even pour out My Spirit on My male and female slaves in those days, and they will prophesy. 19 I will display wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below: blood and fire and a cloud of smoke. 20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the great and remarkable Day of the Lord comes. 21 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
These verses are well known among the Jews. But the Jews seemed to ignore I will pour out My Spirit on all humanity. One of their greatest expectations was the Day of the Lord. This was the major event that ends history, but it was also telescoping action- in that it is also immanent Joel 2:1 (ESV)The Day of the Lord -2 Blow a trumpet in Zion; sound an alarm on my holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, for the day of the Lord is coming; it is near, and Isaiah 13:6 (ESV)6 Wail, for the day of the Lord is near; as destruction from the Almighty it will come! and Ezekial 33, Obediah 1. The Jews reach their reward. The Old Testament passages dealing with the day of the Lord often convey a sense of imminence, nearness, and expectation: “Wail, for the day of the Lord is near!” day inaugurating the eternal universal rule of God: a in the Old Testament : an eschatological day of ultimate judgment bringing final deliverance or doom.. So it is a judgement for some and a blessing for others and I will pour out my spirit.
The Day of the Lord ....The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the great and remarkable Day of the Lord . The Day of the Lord is mentioned in Joel 5 times. This term is also found in Isaiah, Jeremiah, Amos, Nahum, Haggai,Obedia,Zephaniah, Zechariah, and Malachi- So of the 17 prophetic OT books, almost 60% of them refer to the Day of the Lord [these books are pre- and post-exile writings]. These all foretell of a disruption or disturbing the heavens and/or shaking of the earth. In other words all creation - heavens and earth are affected. The specific symbolic description of the sun and moon turning dark = Isai [twice], Jer, Amos, Joel, [ 5 times]
Day = “yom” where this meaning = a progression of days/years. Same word in Gen “yom” can mean a 24 hour day for young-earth christians or = ages for old -earth
In the new testament Revelation 6:12 (ESV)12 When he opened the sixth seal, I looked, and behold, there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black as sackcloth, the full moon became like blood,
The Point In Jewish tradition it was not the timing as much as the essence of the event. God’s wrath would befall non-jews and those who had punished Jews, and Israel would be blessed. Some teaching told of the day of the lord falling soon against the aggressors against Israel others pointed to an end time event [the Last Days].
But just as the initiation of the Kingdom of God was taking place much earlier than traditionally thought. Also, the Day of the Lord has begun. At the resurrection there was quaking and darkness, then universal salvation for all who call upon the lord, salvation is open to men and woman and slaves [everyone who calls upon the lord]These are “last days” are now here. Rather than a short great finale of judgement, repentance, and salvation, it turns out to be an extended progression affecting the salvation of the entire world,Both final day events started with the coming of the King and end at the climax of time in Revelation. Christians greeted each other “come our Lord”Maranatha and not working 2 Thessalonians 3:10–11 (ESV)10 For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. 11 For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies.
................21 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
OOOOOOOO Acts 2:22–36 (HCSB) Acts 2:22–36 (ESV) 22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— 23 this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. 24 God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. 25 For David says concerning him,
“ ‘I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken; 26 therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; my flesh also will dwell in hope. 27 For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption. 28 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’ 29 “Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, 31 he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. 33 Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. 34 For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says,
“ ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, 35 until I make your enemies your footstool.” ’
36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”
... because You will not leave me in Hades or allow Your Holy One to see decay refers to Psalm 16:10 (ESV)10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption. Luke quotes Peter as having quoted Psalm 16 where King David says the he [David] will not be abandoned to Sheol, but Peter changes the explanation saying that Jesus was not left in Hades??
Peter emphasizes “that you know” V22 as you yourselves know and V32 we all are witnesses and V33 promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing and V36 all the house of Israel therefore know for certain resulting in V 37 they came under deep conviction
OOOOOOOO Acts 2:37–40 (HCSB) 37 When they heard this, they came under deep conviction and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles: “Brothers, what must we do?”
38 “Repent,” Peter said to them, “and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children, and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” 40 And with many other words he testified and strongly urged them, saying, “Be saved from this corrupt generation!”
OOOOOOOO Acts 2:41–47 (HCSB) 41 So those who accepted his message were baptized, and that day about 3,000 people were added to them. 42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to the prayers. 43 Then fear came over everyone, and many wonders and signs were being performed through the apostles. 44 Now all the believers were together and held all things in common. 45 They sold their possessions and property and distributed the proceeds to all, as anyone had a need. 46 Every day they devoted themselves to meeting together in the temple complex, and broke bread from house to house. They ate their food with a joyful and humble attitude, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And every day the Lord added to them those who were being saved.
