Introduction: Joseph was a teenager when the Lord began speaking to him in dreams. They were simple…
His brother will bow down before him. Another was about his brothers bowing along with his Mom and Dad.
The favoritism of Jacob; coat, told dreams;
Hatred of his brothers; throw him in a pit; saved by Rueben
The others sell him to some Midianites; Child of Keturah (wife after Sarah, 6 sons)
Even though sold into slavery, he was sold to a familiar master
Joseph makes it to Potiphar’s house and exels
Chapter 38
A chapter that is rarely read in public
Here as contrast of Faithlessness and Faithfulness
It also gives us the continuing lineage of Jesus
- Lion of Judah
So why do we need to hear this uncomfortable story.
Good news!
God is interested in sinners
Interesting when you get to Hebrews we meet different people
Don’t see the mis-steps of Abraham - only faith and believing
Don’t see the mediocrity of Isaac
Don’t see the thievery of Jacob
Why is that? What’s the difference between Genesis 12-37 and Hebrews 12?
JESUS…. GRACE….. MERCY
Reuben (first born) forfeits his rights to blessing by an affair with father’s concubines
Judah was next, but we will mess up pretty bad in Chapter 38
STILL, Jesus comes from the line of Judah!
THAT is mercy
THAT is grace
THAT is the long-suffering of God
Everyone has an uncle that they don’t want to mention —JUDAH
Genesis 38:1-5 And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah. 2 And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shuah; and he took her, and went in unto her. 3 And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er. 4 And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan. 5 And she yet again conceived, and bare a son; and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bare him.
