Continuing our Series of Preaching and Teaching through 1 Timothy.
Pastor Orr and the Red Table tonight 6:30pm
Text devotional to 27636
If you put these things before the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed. Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance. For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.
Since Godlessness is all around, Be Godly and practice Godliness!!!!!
This text is written with the backdrop of a problem. The problem is false teaching and teachers.
remember chapter 1- paul tells timothy this
As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the stewardship from God that is by faith. The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. Certain persons, by swerving from these, have wandered away into vain discussion, desiring to be teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make confident assertions.
this issue still exists today. we must arm ourselves in Godliness.
paul gives 3 commands in our section today:
1. The first command is an implicit one about teaching (v. 6a), embedded in the summarizing transition that is backed by the exhortation to excellence, all linked to continued adherence to the “good teaching.
2. The second command specifically urges avoidance of the false doctrines
3. while the third command, in contrast, calls for pursuit of godliness

Crazy in the last days
Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness;
Silly myths are sweeping the nation
silly myths almost ruined my marriage: tell the story of the pancake and dry pie
Godless teachings
crystals
talking to ancestors
personal spirituality-
Sound doctrine helps with this.
Cultivating Godliness
Cultivating Godliness
for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.
The Letters to Timothy and Titus 2. Sound Teaching and Godliness (4:6–10)
The third command employs language typical of Greco-Roman ethical teaching: “train yourself.” It was first applied to the effort and exercise involved in physical contexts, and transferred naturally to describe the work of progressing toward virtue in the moral and spiritual sphere. Here the language of training paves the way for development of the next comparison of bodily exercise and godliness.
As followers of Christ we must be knowledgeable of the Truth of God and how to Relay this truth Culture.
we have to personally be in the Word.
This is the only way we can stave off the attacks of the myths being created in the world.
people are coming up with all kinds of philosophies to entertain the itching ears of our culture.
Adults-College-Kids
Companies and organizations spend billions to keep our minds of the main reason we exist: that is to glorify God and enjoy Him.
fashion and beauty industry- dictate whats beauty and whats not.
video gaming- takes people’s minds off reality
the political arena- causes division rather than bring people together. (if you think i’m lying-look at how this Global pandemic is shaping up). Shows just how divided our nation is, it is at the point of ruins.
The church is no different: Myths have been created to take our attention off of Christ and His righteousness.
Nation of Islam-Many African American families were attracted to the Nation of Islam because of its emphasis on identity, self-sufficiency, community, and dignity.
Hebrew Israelites- the idea of restoring Black identity
Kemeticism
Black Athiesm
the Conscious community
All of these have been luring people out of the will of God and for this reason we have to be trained in Godliness
Psalm 1 we must delight in the word, to be like a tree planted by rivers of water.
The word must be a lamp to our feet and light to our pathway.
we need more believers to make the declaration like the psalmist in psa 119- “ i hide the word in my heart that i might sin against you.
This is the type of commitment we must have to reading the word, meditating on the word. . praying.
Orr and the Bible reading plan.
like share. . . others are doing it
Training in Godliness is liken to Bodily training. We all know, bodily training is beneficial: stress relief, weight management, etc
Spiritual training is more important: the implications of our spiritual training is both now and in the life to come.
Training programs
coaches can only coach, can’t get you to play.
E2M- they set the table, set up meal plan and workouts. . . you have to do the work.
Center our Hope
Center our Hope
The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance. For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.
Our hope is in Christ the solid rock, it is not in this world.
