Three in One

What is something that you just don’t understand?
Texting, workings of a car, etc.
We are going to talk about a very important topic that is very difficult to understand.
As a matter of fact, every person in here still struggles to understand this topic and we will not fully comprehend it until we are face to face with God the creator one day.
2 Peter 3:16 ESV
as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures.
There are some things in the bible that are just hard to understand. No matter how we try, no matter how much you study them, you just won’t understand it all.
With that encouraging thought in mind, lets talk about God, three parts in one.
How many God’s do we serve?
We serve one God—but he has three parts.
Can I get an volunteer from the adults (married, with kids)
He is a dad, he is a husband, he is an employee. This person is all three of those things but he is still the same person.
God has three parts and they work together. Scripture references all three parts often, in one passage we see all of them together.
We see all three parts in Matthew 28
Matthew 28:19 ESV
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
So God is one, but is Three, and each of these parts are unique and special.
We have a name for this---its called “trinity” it means three in one
So three parts: 1st part is God the Father
1st God the Father
What are some things the father does?
He orders all things Psalms 145:8-9, 1 Cor 8:6
He is creator Gen 1:1, Eph 3:9
He is sovereign Psalms 103:19, Rom 11:36
He upholds, directs, governs all creatures and events 1 Chron 29:11
He is neither author or approver of sin Hab 1:13
He adopts us John 1:12, Rom 8:15, Gal 4:5, Heb 12:5-9
So the first part is God the Father
Second part is God the Son.
What are some things the Son does?
First he is coequal and coeternal John 10:30, John 14:9
The father creates through the Son John 1:3, Col 1:15-17
John 1:3 ESV
All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
Colossians 1:15–17 ESV
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
He is the incarnation—God became man. We celebrate this at Christmas.
He came to reveal God
He made us right before God the Father by shedding of his blood on the cross
1 Peter 2:24 ESV
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
He through death freed the sinner from the punishment, penalty and power of sin and one day the presence, by which we are declared righteous
He resurrected and ascended
Romans 8:34 ESV
Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.
He will return for His church
Mediator between God and man
1 Timothy 2:5 ESV
For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
The coming universal King who will reign on the throne of David
So the second part is Jesus, God the Son
The third part of the trinity is the Spirit
What does the Spirit do?
John 14:17 ESV
even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
Incarnation—conceived the child
Matthew 1:18 ESV
Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.
Does the work of divine written revelation
Does the work of salvation
From John MacArthur--The spirit is supernatural and sovereign agent in regeneration, baptizing all believers into the body of Christ
1 Corinthians 12:13 ESV
For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.
It is the teacher and guide for apostles and prophets
Indwells believers
Administers spiritual gifts, glorifies Christ by redeeming lost and building up believers
Acts 1:8 ESV
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
So we have these three parts but they are all one God.
Heres what I want to take home with you tonight:
Trinity- it means three parts in one. Go tell your parents and siblings, trinity. If you say it at school tomorrow people will think your super smart.
We serve one God. This is very important—we serve 1 God, not many God’s like other religions. We are created and sustained by one God. That one God is who makes us right, that one God created us and one day will return for us.
God has three different parts who do three different jobs. The Father, the Son and the Spirit.
