Exodus 12:21-42 and Deuteronomy 30:1-10
Main Idea: The connection between the slavery, deliverance, and redemption of Israel to the slavery, deliverance, and redemption of believers.
Israel’s Exodus/Passover Story
Read Exodus 12:21-42 (21-28, 29-32, 33-42)
Let’s go through the story of Israel from captivity to their Exodus out of Egypt.
Who were the captives and who was keeping them captive? Israel was being help captive by Pharaoh of Egypt
Who was the deliverer? Moses - God alone was their deliverer, but he did it through a man
What were they being delivered to? To the promised land and relationship with him as his chosen people.
Couple of notes on Passover here:
Israelites in Exodus 12 were not exempt from the male first born’s life being taken simply because of their lineage. They had to have a personal application of the blood of the lamb on their own home.
The lamb that was the sacrifice for the Israelites was to be a lamb without blemish. This was a level of holiness that had to be in place.
Our Exodus/Passover Story
What similar words do you see in the NT that mirror our exodus with Israel’s exodus? slavery, freedom, deliver, redeem. The story of Exodus is a picture of our redemption through salvation.
Who were we captives to? Humanity enslaved by sin.
Who was our deliverer? Jesus - Heb. 3:1-6
What did he deliver us to? To eternal life and a right relationship with him.
Read Rom. 5:9, Eph. 1:7 - Thinking about earlier notes, how does the Passover foreshadow Jesus?
We are not exempt from hell because of our lineage or because we were ‘raised in a christian home’ - it is about a personal relationship or personal application. Read Rom. 1:16 - believe!
The lamb that was our sacrifice, once for all, was the perfect, spotless lamb that met the standard of holiness. Read 1 Peter 1:18-19 - Jesus, “our passover lamb of God” was the perfect sacrifice for our deliverance.
Summing up:
What does this show us about God?
What does this show us about man?
What does this show us about ourselves?
How will you abide/apply these things this week?
