Transcript
Father, we come before you today with very heavy hearts.
We pray for John’s family and friends and ask you to comfort them
in this time of great tragedy and loss. We know that your Holy
Spirit who is called our comforter is here today, and we ask Him to
touch each one here with your very presence and love.
Guide us, as we use this time to celebrate John’s life.
Fishing with Jesus
But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. Therefore encourage one another with these words.
Don’t major on the minor
There’s more to life
Listen, and I will tell you a divine mystery: not all of us will die, but we will all be transformed. It will happen in an instant —in the twinkling of his eye. For when the last trumpet is sounded, the dead will come back to life. We will be indestructible and we will be transformed. For we will discard our mortal “clothes” and slip into a body that is imperishable. What is mortal now will be exchanged for immortality. And when that which is mortal puts on immortality, and what now decays is exchanged for what will never decay, then the Scripture will be fulfilled that says:
Death is swallowed up by a triumphant victory!
So death, tell me, where is your victory?
Tell me death, where is your sting?
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.
When war broke out between Spain and the United States it was very necessary to communicate quickly with the leader of the I nsurgents. Garcia was somewhere in the mountain vastness of Cuba – no one knew where. No mail nor telegraph messagecould reach him. The President must secure his cooperation, and quickly. What to do! Someone said to the President, “There’s a fellow by the name of Rowan will find Garcia for you, if anybody can”. Rowan was sent for and given a letter to be delivered to Garcia. How “the fellow by the name of Rowan” took the letter, sealed it up in an oil-skin pouch, strapped it over his heart, in four days landed by night off thecoast of Cuba from an open boat, disappeared into the jungle, and in three weeks came out on the other side of the Island, having tra- versed a hostilecountry on foot, and delivered his letter to Garcia – are things I have no special desire now to tell in detail.
