Must have an Open Home--- (philoxenon, stranger) During the time of the text there were traveling Evangelist or missionaries. There were not places to stay on the dangerous roads so they would seek shelter at night. it was considered shameful to allow a stranger to stay in the streets. Genesis 18 and Genesis 19:1-4 “And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground; And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant’s house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night. And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat. But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter:”
Must Have an Open Heart---The preacher must not only act with hospitality but must have an attitude of hospitality. 1 Pet.4:9 “Use hospitality one to another without grudging.” It is not enough to allow people into your home but must have the right attitude in doing so. Ti.1:8 “But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;”
Must Have an Open Space---3 Jn.5-8 “Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers; which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well: because that for his name’s sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles. We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellowhelpers to the truth.”

A Student of People—1 Sam.3:8 “And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the Lord had called the child.” 1Cor.2:15-16 “But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.”
A Student of Life---Prov.15:28 “The heart of the righteous studieth to answer: But the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things.” Heb.5:14 “But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”
