Entry-Level of Discipleship
Matthew 4:18-22 “And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.
19 Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 They immediately left their nets and followed Him.
21 Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets.
He called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.”
Discipleship - is the process of training people incrementally in some discipline or way of life.
Such as: (Christian living; Disciple; following Christ; Growth).
Discipleship is the process of devoting oneself to another to learn from and become more like him.
For the Christian this refers to process of learning the teachings of Jesus and following after his example in obedience through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Discipleship is not only the process of becoming a disciple, but the making of other disciples through teaching and evangelizing.
Intro: This is the beginning of Jesus’ earthly ministry.
After He moves to Capernaum and makes this his ministerial head quarters.
The 1st thing Jesus does is “Preach”.
1 Matthew shares with us Jesus’ Invitation to Discipleship; Vs.19a “Follow me”
What does it mean to follow Jesus - A disciple is first a believer who has exercised faith.
A Christian disciple is a believer who follow Christ and then imitates Christ as a model for others to follow.
Walk, talk, live, act, love, behave, forgive, be patient, longsuffering, kind, like Christ.
A: Who were they that recieved this invitation?
“And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.
B: What were they doing when they recieved The invitation?
2 Matthew shares with us Jesus Intentions for them in Discipleship; Vs19b - 19 Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
We must remember that Jesus always has intentionality behind his invitations.
He calls us with a purpose in mind.
There is a difference in fishing for fish and fishing for men!
3 Matthew shares with us the Immediacy of the Disciples; Vs20 “straightway”; 22 “immediately”.
Immediacy is instant involvement with something, giving rise to a sense of urgency.
A: If you are going to respond with immediacy then we must stop what we are doing - (They left their nets, they left their ships and father).
B: If you are going to respond with immediacy then we must start walking behind Jesus ( They followed Him).
