HOOK

Unity and not uniformity is key to serving Jesus well

BOOK | 1 CORINTHIANS 12

LOOK

MANIFESTATION OF THE SPIRIT IS GIVEN FOR THE COMMON GOOD
1 Corinthians 12:7 NIV
7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
WISDOM, KNOWLEDGE, FAITH, HEALING, MIRACULOUS POWER, PROPHECY, DISCERNMENT, TONGUES, INTERPRETATION
1 Corinthians 12:8–10 NIV
8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.
All Christians have faith. Some however have the spiritual gift of faith which is an unusual measure of trust in the Holy Spirit‘s power
Prophecy is not just a prediction about the future it can also mean preaching God‘s word with power.
Distinguishing between spirits means the ability to discern whether a person who claims to speak for God is actually doing so or is speaking by an evil spirit
THE HOLY SPIRIT DETERMINES TO WHOM HE WILL DISTRIBUTE THOSE GIFTS
1 Corinthians 12:11 NIV
11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.
AFTER PAUL TALKED ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS, HE SHIFTED TO THAT MATTER ABOUT UNITY AND DIVERSITY OF THE CHURCH
Instead of building up in unifying the Corinthian church the issue of spiritual gifts was splitting it
Spiritual gifts had become symbols of spiritual power causing rivalries because some people thought they were more spiritual than others because of their gifts— terrible misuse
We can be divisive if we insist on using our gift our own way without being sensitive to others. We must never use gifts as a means of manipulating others or serving our own self interest
THE SAME SPIRIT THAT DISTRIBUTES DIFFERENT GIFTS, IS THE SAME SPIRIT THAT WE’RE ALL BAPTIZED BY— TO FORM ONE BODY
1 Corinthians 12:13 NIV
13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.
ONE SPIRIT THAT DISTRIBUTES DIFFERENT GIFTS TO MANY PARTS TO FORM ONE BODY
1 Corinthians 12:20 NIV
20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body.
We are responsible to use and sharpen our gifts but we can take no credit for what God has really given us
ONE PART OF THE BODY CANNOT SAY TO THE OTHER— I DON’T NEED YOU!
Even the weaker parts of the body are indispensable
The Pineal Gland— smallest organ in the human body— located deep inside that produces melatonin
We should honor who we think are less honorable
Christians must avoid two common errors:
Being too proud of their abilities.
Thinking they have nothing to give the body of believers.
Instead of comparing ourselves to one another we should’ve use our different gifts together to spread the good news of salvation.
GOD HAS PUT THE BODY TOGETHER, GIVING GREATER HONOR TO THE PARTS THAT LACKS IT
1 Corinthians 12:24 NIV
24 while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it,
The church is composed of many types of people from my variety of backgrounds with a multitude of gifts and abilities.
It is easy for these differences to divide people as was the case in current.
But despite the differences all believers have one thing in common - faith in Christ
WE SHOULD HAVE EQUAL CONCERN FOR EACH OTHER— SO THAT THERE SHOULD BE NO DIVISION IN THE BODY
1 Corinthians 12:25 (NIV)
25 so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other.
Equal care— equal compassion
What is your response when I fellow Christian is honored? How do you respond when someone is suffering?
There is no such thing as private or individualistic Christianity. We should stop with enjoying only our own relationship with God. We need to get involved in the lives of others.
ONE FOR ALL AND ALL FOR ONE— NO FACTIONALISM
1 Corinthians 12:26 NIV
26 If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.
GOD HAS PLACED IN THE CHURCH THE FIVE FOLD MINISTRY AND MORE
1 Corinthians 12:28 NIV
28 And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues.
Ephesians 4:11–12 NIV
11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up
Your spiritual gifts are not for your own self advancement. They were given to you for serving God and enhancing the spiritual growth of the body of believers.
EAGERLY DESIRE THE GREATER GIFTS
1 Corinthians 12:31 NIV
31 Now eagerly desire the greater gifts. And yet I will show you the most excellent way.
SPIRITUAL GIFTS IS NOT FOR YOU BENEFIT BUT FOR THE BENEFIT OF OTHERS
1 Peter 4:10 NIV
10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.
The birth of AGHCN was like a birth of a younger sister of ACSD— I apologize if somehow, I made you feel neglected— for not getting the usual attention from me
The church can expect to see positive changes as we go forward serving our Lord together

TOOK

LET’S LOOK AFTER EACH OTHER’S WELFARE

Philippians 2:4 AMP
4 Let each of you esteem and look upon and be concerned for not [merely] his own interests, but also each for the interests of others.
Question: Do you look after the welfare of your fellow church members? In what ways are you reaching out to them?

LET’S CARRY EACH OTHER’S BURDEN

Galatians 6:2 GW
2 Help carry each other’s burdens. In this way you will follow Christ’s teachings.
Question: Do you offer help to those who has need? Have you gone out of your comfort zone to offer a hand to those who are burdened?

LET’S BUILD EACH OTHER UP

1 Thessalonians 5:11 MSG
11 So speak encouraging words to one another. Build up hope so you’ll all be together in this, no one left out, no one left behind. I know you’re already doing this; just keep on doing it.
Question: We have witnessed terrible things in the past year and a half, hopelessness and uncertainties engulfed many. Have you encouraged anyone in the church to build up hope? Did you make them feel that they’re not being left behind?
Illustration: Tools in the Hands of the Carpenter A group of tools once came together for a meeting with Mr. Hammer presiding.
Brother Screwdriver said, "Brother Hammer must go, because he is always making noise, always knocking."
Hammer said, "Brother Screwdriver has to go, because you have to turn him around all the time to get him to do his job."
Someone else said, "Brother Plane has to go, because he always wants to just touch the surface. He never goes deep."
Plane said, "Brother Sandpaper has to go then, because he is always rubbing people the wrong way."
Sandpaper spoke up, "Then Brother Saw must go, because he is always cutting things up and leaving sawdust all over the place."
Then the Carpenter from Nazareth came in and said, "I need all of you. We have a job to do. Put yourselves in my hand. Let me use you."
Hammer said, "Here am I, Lord, use me."
Screwdriver said, "Here am I, Lord, use me."
Plane said, "Here am I, Lord, use me."
Sandpaper said, "Here am I, Lord, use me."
Saw said, "Here am I, Lord, use me."
So when each gave himself to the Carpenter from Nazareth together they built: A church in which the Gospel could be preached.
A bridge of understanding so different groups could come together.
A house so that a home could be built and a coffin to bury Satan in.
That is what happens when all the tools are used for the purpose for which they were made.
