I. Jesus Foretells His Death vs. 32-34

A. They were amazed and fearful, because they knew something big was going to happen.
B. Jesus tells His disciples, exactly what will happen in detail, but they doubt it, because it doesn’t fit their notion of what the Messiah should be. (Religion ex)

II. Jesus Rebukes James and John vs. 35-41

A. Matthew says that their mother asks Jesus. She asks Him first, but He wanted to hear it from them.
Matthew 20:20–21 NASB95
Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to Jesus with her sons, bowing down and making a request of Him. And He said to her, “What do you wish?” She said to Him, “Command that in Your kingdom these two sons of mine may sit one on Your right and one on Your left.”
B. They wanted prime spots in the kingdom, because they were in the inner circle, they thought themselves to be great. And they were probably trying to get to it, before Peter. Besides, who’s going to say no, to a sweet older lady.
C. Jesus tells them plainly, that they don’t know what they’re asking. They will both suffer, but not like Jesus did, and they can’t earn what Jesus earns.
D. They would drink the cup of suffering, not realizing at the moment what that meant. James will be the first disciple to be martyred and John the last one to die. The only one to die of natural causes. He died the martyrdom of being the last one alive according to Billy Graham.
E. Jesus’ rebuke of them is that they will suffer, but that they are asking a favor that only the Father can grant.

III. Jesus’ Purpose in Living vs. 42-45

A. If you want to be great, you must serve everyone. Jesus has been trying to get this through their heads and hearts, because if they stay prideful, they would have been no use to anyone.
B. Jesus purpose in life was to save our souls, and to serve us. He came to die, so that we might live. Luke 19:10 ““For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.””
C. We are first to follow Christ (salvation)
D. Then serve Jesus by serving others.
