Gen 18.1 - 22.24, 2 Kings 4:1-37, Luke 17:28-37

Genesis 18:1 NKJV
Then the Lord appeared to him by the terebinth trees of Mamre, as he was sitting in the tent door in the heat of the day.
That word ‘appeared’ carries with it a sense of purpose – God does not appear without purpose or expectations.
He appears so that He is seen and it should be obvious to those He appears to that He, that is God, has seen; that He is aware of what’s going on - and will act on it.
appeared:
Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology - become or be visible or manifest
Merriam Webster - to become evident or manifest 〈there appears to be evidence to the contrary〉
My Words- That is: the manifestation has a sense of convincing someone of the truth
God has appeared many times and in many ways:
A burning bush, a pillar of cloud, a pillar of fire, a man, an Angel of the Lord
In a dream, in a vision, In His Word – He can appear through us.
Hebrews 1:1–3 NKJV
God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
1 Timothy 3:16 NKJV
And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, Justified in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Preached among the Gentiles, Believed on in the world, Received up in glory.
John 14:21 NKJV
He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.”
1 Corinthians 12:7 NKJV
But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:
1 John 3:8 NKJV
He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.
And it is also used indirectly through expressions, like:
found favor in Your sight”, “God opened her eyes
The Angels ‘struck the men who were at the doorway of the house with blindness’
The Angels said “Do not look behind you …But Lot’s wife looked back
But we will look now at the Hebrew word used for ‘appeared’: רָאָה râʾâh, raw-aw´; Strong’s 7200
Genesis 18:1–2 (NKJV)
Then the Lord appeared to him by the terebinth trees of Mamre, as he was sitting in the tent door in the heat of the day.
So he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing by him; and when he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them, and bowed himself to the ground,
Genesis 18:21 (NKJV)
I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry against it that has come to Me; and if not, I will know.”
Genesis 19:28 (NKJV)
Then he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain; and he saw, and behold, the smoke of the land which went up like the smoke of a furnace.
Genesis 20:10–11 (NKJV)
Then Abimelech said to Abraham, “What did you have in view, that you have done this thing?”
And Abraham said, “Because I thought, surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will kill me on account of my wife.
Genesis 21:9 (NKJV)
And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, scoffing.
Genesis 21:16 (NKJV)
Then she went and sat down across from him at a distance of about a bowshot; for she said to herself, “Let me not see the death of the boy.” So she sat opposite him, and lifted her voice and wept.
Genesis 21:19 (NKJV)
Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. And she went and filled the skin with water, and gave the lad a drink.
Genesis 22:4 (NKJV)
Then on the third day Abraham lifted his eyes and saw the place afar off.
Genesis 22:8 (NKJV)
And Abraham said, “My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering.” So the two of them went together.
Genesis 22:13 (NKJV)
Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son.
So you can see that in this portion there is a predominant use of words meaning to look, to see, to understand.
But our text ‘caps off ‘ it’s teaching with Abraham’s naming of the area.
Genesis 22:14 NKJV “And Abraham called the name of the place, The-LORD-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, "In the Mount of The LORD it shall be provided."” Genesis 22:14 AV “And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh : as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.” Genesis 22:14 CJB Avraham called the place Adonai Yir’eh [Adonai will see(to it), Adonai provides]—as it is said to this day, “On the mountain Adonai is seen.”
We have a God that will “see to it”
Genesis 22:14 Tanakh Masoretic Text (1917 Jewish Publication Society) And Abraham called the name of that place Adonai-jireh; as it is said to this day: ‘In the mount where the Lord is seen.’ Genesis 22:14 Tanakh (1985 Jewish Publication Society) And Abraham named that site Adonai-yireh, whence the present saying, “On the mount of the Lord there is vision.”
The New Strong’s Dictionary of Hebrew and Greek Words: 3070. יְהוָֹה יִרְאֶה Yehôvâh Yir˒eh, yeh-ho-vaw´ yir-eh´; from 3068 Jehovah and 7200 will see; Jehovah will see (to it); Jehovah-Jireh, a symb. name for Mt. Moriah:— Jehovah-jireh.
A concise Dictionary of the Words in the Greek Testament and The Hebrew Bible:
7200. רָאָה râʾâh, raw-aw´; a prim. root; to see, lit. or fig. (in numerous applications, direct and implied, trans., intrans. and causat.):—advise self, appear, approve, behold, × certainly, consider, discern, (make to) enjoy, have experience, gaze, take heed, × indeed, × joyfully, lo, look (on, one another, one on another, one upon another, out, up, upon), mark, meet, × be near, perceive, present, provide, regard, (have) respect, (fore-, cause to, let) see (-r, -m, one another), shew (self), × sight of others, (e-) spy, stare, × surely, × think, view, visions.
The theme and structure of our portion seem to be based on three concepts of our word râʾâh
That is appear, discern and provide, so I will use these as headings in each story of our portion.
APPEAR: God appearing before man or man exhibiting God’ attributes.
DISCERN: Knowing, understanding, the character of God and acting upon it.
PROVIDE: God equipping, blessing, us in our endeavour to represent Him.
ABRAHAM
APPEAR: (Genesis 18:1 NKJV)
“Then the LORD appeared to him by the terebinth trees of Mamre, as he was sitting in the tent door in the heat of the day.”
DISCERN: (Genesis 18:3-5 NKJV)
"My Lord, if I have now found favor in Your sight, do not pass on by Your servant. "Please let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree. "And I will bring a morsel of bread, that you may refresh your hearts. After that you may pass by, inasmuch as you have come to your servant." They said, "Do as you have said."”
Abraham, who was around 99 years of age, hurried to meet them –
to “fetch a morsel of bread” – he hurried to Sarah with instructions – “take 21 liters of flour”
Hurried to the flock and handpicked a calf, not a lamb, a calf and only then passed the chore to one of his many servants – who hurried then Abraham stood while they ate, ready to fetch what they needed
And remember our opening verse says that it was the “heat of the day”
and if the scripture is chronological and recent to the previous chapter he was just circumcised!!!
PROVIDE: (Genesis 18:10 NKJV)
“And He said, "I will certainly return to you according to the time of life, and behold, Sarah your wife shall have a son." (Sarah was listening in the tent door which was behind him.)”
SODDOM and GoMORRAH
Genesis 18:17–21 NKJV
And the Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am doing, since Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord, to do righteousness and justice, that the Lord may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him.” And the Lord said, “Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grave, I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry against it that has come to Me; and if not, I will know.”
Abraham does what is right and intercedes; sees and discerns, acts on the truth of God’s righteousness
Genesis 18:25 NKJV
Far be it from You to do such a thing as this, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be as the wicked; far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?”
Proverbs 14:34 NKJV
Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a reproach to any people.
Ezekiel 16:49–50 NKJV
Look, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: She and her daughter had pride, fullness of food, and abundance of idleness; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. And they were haughty and committed abomination before Me; therefore I took them away as I saw fit.
TAKING THE BLESSING AND NOT GIVING THE BLESSING
LOT
APPEAR
Genesis 19:1 NKJV
Now the two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground.
DISCERN
Genesis 19:2 NKJV
And he said, “Here now, my lords, please turn in to your servant’s house and spend the night, and wash your feet; then you may rise early and go on your way.” And they said, “No, but we will spend the night in the open square.”
Genesis 19:5 NKJV
And they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may know them carnally.”
Genesis 19:9 NKJV
And they said, “Stand back!” Then they said, “This one came in to stay here, and he keeps acting as a judge; now we will deal worse with you than with them.” So they pressed hard against the man Lot, and came near to break down the door.
PROVIDE
Genesis 19:15–16 NKJV
When the morning dawned, the angels urged Lot to hurry, saying, “Arise, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be consumed in the punishment of the city.” And while he lingered, the men took hold of his hand, his wife’s hand, and the hands of his two daughters, the Lord being merciful to him, and they brought him out and set him outside the city.
Genesis 19:20–21 NKJV
See now, this city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one; please let me escape there (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.” And he said to him, “See, I have favored you concerning this thing also, in that I will not overthrow this city for which you have spoken.
Genesis 19:29 NKJV
And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when He overthrew the cities in which Lot had dwelt.
You can take Lot and his family out of Sodom and Gomorrah,
but you can’t take Sodom and Gomorrah out of Lot and his family.
1 John 2:15–17 NKJV
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.
Luke 17:28–33 NKJV
Likewise as it was also in the days of Lot: They ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; but on the day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. Even so will it be in the day when the Son of Man is revealed. “In that day, he who is on the housetop, and his goods are in the house, let him not come down to take them away. And likewise the one who is in the field, let him not turn back. Remember Lot’s wife. Whoever seeks to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it.
ABI-MELECH
DISCERN
Genesis 20:2 NKJV
Now Abraham said of Sarah his wife, “She is my sister.” And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.
TAKING THE BLESSING AND NOT GIVING THE BLESSING
A lack of discernment on Abraham’s part as he did not trust God’s provision but lied, thereby risking the promised blessing.
Abi-melech had no discernment and took what he wanted; yet he called out Abraham’s sin.
Notice the sarcasm in Abi-melech’s words to Sarah
Genesis 20:16 NKJV
Then to Sarah he said, “Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver; indeed this vindicates you before all who are with you and before everybody.” Thus she was rebuked.
APPEAR
Genesis 20:3 NKJV
But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, “Indeed you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is a man’s wife.”
PROVIDE
Genesis 20:7 NKJV
Now therefore, restore the man’s wife; for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you shall live. But if you do not restore her, know that you shall surely die, you and all who are yours.”
Even when we are unfaithful – God remains faithful.
Hagar and Ishmael
Genesis 16:4–13 NKJV
So he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress became despised in her eyes. Then Sarai said to Abram, “My wrong be upon you! I gave my maid into your embrace; and when she saw that she had conceived, I became despised in her eyes. The Lord judge between you and me.” So Abram said to Sarai, “Indeed your maid is in your hand; do to her as you please.” And when Sarai dealt harshly with her, she fled from her presence. Now the Angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to Shur. And He said, “Hagar, Sarai’s maid, where have you come from, and where are you going?” She said, “I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai.” The Angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress, and submit yourself under her hand.” Then the Angel of the Lord said to her, “I will multiply your descendants exceedingly, so that they shall not be counted for multitude.” And the Angel of the Lord said to her: “Behold, you are with child, And you shall bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael, Because the Lord has heard your affliction. He shall be a wild man; His hand shall be against every man, And every man’s hand against him. And he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.” Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, You-Are-the-God-Who-Sees; for she said, “Have I also here seen Him who sees me?”
Ishmael= "God will hear"

DISCERN
Genesis 21:8–9 NKJV
So the child grew and was weaned. And Abraham made a great feast on the same day that Isaac was weaned. And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, scoffing.
We might read this and see a child making fun, but…
6711. צָחַק tsâchaq, tsaw-khak´; a prim. root; to laugh outright -in merriment or scorn)
scorn) Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary
1: open dislike and disrespect or derision often mixed with indignation
2: an expression of contempt or derision
3: an object of extreme disdain, contempt, or derision: something contemptible
Genesis 16:16 NKJV
Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
Genesis 21:5 NKJV
Now Abraham was one hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.
So Ishmael was at least 14 or 15 years old – past the age when he would be considered a man.
APPEAR
Genesis 21:17 NKJV
And God heard the voice of the lad. Then the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said to her, “What ails you, Hagar? Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is.
PROVIDE
Genesis 21:19 NKJV
Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. And she went and filled the skin with water, and gave the lad a drink.
TAKING THE BLESSING AND NOT GIVING THE BLESSING
Genesis 21:12–13 NKJV
But God said to Abraham, “Do not let it be displeasing in your sight because of the lad or because of your bondwoman. Whatever Sarah has said to you, listen to her voice; for in Isaac your seed shall be called. Yet I will also make a nation of the son of the bondwoman, because he is your seed.”
Galatians 4:30 NKJV
Nevertheless what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the bondwoman and her son, for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.
As Galations 4 & 5 point out: we are to trust in God – not in works.
BEER-SHEBA
Abi-melech wanted an oath.
Genesis 21:23 NKJV
Now therefore, swear to me by God that you will not deal falsely with me, with my offspring, or with my posterity; but that according to the kindness that I have done to you, you will do to me and to the land in which you have dwelt.”
Abraham wanted an oath
Genesis 21:30–31 NKJV
And he said, “You will take these seven ewe lambs from my hand, that they may be my witness that I have dug this well.” Therefore he called that place Beersheba, because the two of them swore an oath there.
Romans 12:17–21 NKJV
Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. Therefore “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
ABRAHAM AND ISAAC
APPEAR
Genesis 22:1–2 NKJV
Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then He said, “Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”
burnt offering 05930 עלה ‘olah o-law’ or עולה ‘owlah o-law’ - literally: To go up
Leviticus 23:15,18
Leviticus 23:18 NKJV
And you shall offer with the bread seven lambs of the first year, without blemish, one young bull, and two rams. They shall be as a burnt offering to the Lord, with their grain offering and their drink offerings, an offering made by fire for a sweet aroma to the Lord.
DISCERN
Did Abraham now trust God and His Promises?
Does he see that it is foolish to take matters into his own hands?
Genesis 22:5 NKJV
And Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; the lad and I will go yonder and worship, and we will come back to you.”
Genesis 22:8 NKJV
And Abraham said, “My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering.” So the two of them went together.
Genesis 22:14 NKJV
And Abraham called the name of the place, The-Lord-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”
PROVIDE
Genesis 22:12–13 NKJV
And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.” Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son.
Genesis 22:15–18 NKJV
Then the Angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time out of heaven, and said: “By Myself I have sworn, says the Lord, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son— blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies. In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”
God will provide for Himself the lamb
Hebrews 10:5 NKJV
Therefore, when He came into the world, He said: “Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, But a body You have prepared for Me.
Genesis 3:17–18 NKJV
Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’: “Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it All the days of your life. Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, And you shall eat the herb of the field.
Proverbs 24:30–32 NKJV
I went by the field of the lazy man, And by the vineyard of the man devoid of understanding; And there it was, all overgrown with thorns; Its surface was covered with nettles; Its stone wall was broken down. When I saw it, I considered it well; I looked on it and received instruction:
Thorns and thistles represent the outcome of man’s sin, a man devoid of understanding.
Matthew 27:29 NKJV
When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
Galatians 3:13–14 NKJV
Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
Genesis 22:13 NKJV
Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son.
ram’s horn 07782 שׁופר showphar sho-far’ or שׁפר shophar sho-far’
Leviticus 25:9 NKJV
Then you shall cause the trumpet of the Jubilee to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month; on the Day of Atonement you shall make the trumpet to sound throughout all your land.
Revelation 8:2 NKJV
And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and to them were given seven trumpets.
Revelation 11:15 NKJV
Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!”
Psalm 23:1–6 NKJV
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.
Ephesians 3:20–21 NKJV
Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
I'm a pilgrim and stranger, Rough and thorny is the road,
Often in the midst of danger, But it leads to God. Clouds and darkness oft distress me, Great and many are my foes;
Anxious cares and thoughts oppress me: But my Father knows.
O how sweet is this assurance 'Midst the conflict and the strife! Although sorrows past endurance Follow me through life. Home in prospect still can cheer me; Yes, and give me sweet repose, While I feel His presence near me: For my Father knows.
Yes, He sees and knows me daily; Watches over me in love; Sends me help when foes assail me, Bids me look above. Soon my journey will be ended, Life is drawing to a close; I shall then be well attended: This my Father knows.
I shall then with joy behold Him, Face to face my Saviour see; Fall with rapture and adore Him For His love to me. Nothing more shall then distress me In the land of sweet repose; Jesus stands engaged to bless me: This my Father knows.
